This is a solution, not a problem. I had been backing up my dvd's since 2006 using DVD Shrink on either of two machines running Windows XP. Last month I bought a couple of new releases of classic films and I got a "copy protection error" pop-up from DVD Shrink. I downloaded and installed the latest version of DVD Shrink on both machines. No joy. DVD Shrink could not read the dvd at all. So, I installed DVD Shrink on my new Asus laptop running Windows 7. Problem solved. Both dvds ripped standard.

"latest version" ??.. you mean the same "latest version" that has been around for 6+ years when it stopped development??

sorry.. I don't believe you.. must be having dvd-fab or something running backgrounded on the win7 shitheap.. or the dvd drives are shot in the older machines.

It's time you started using proper grown up modern ripping tools.. because otherwise like just happened you will get laughed at..

Speaking to the dvd drives-are-shot issue, I went online and found a solution to using the older dvd drives. Here is what I was told to do. (1) with new dvd in the drive, click on My Computer, right click on the dvd drive letter, choose explore. This brings up the VIDEO_TS folder. (2) Boot DVD Shrink (3) Go the the DVD Shrink drop down Menu and select Open Folder. (4) Go the the drive and select the VIDEO_TS. DVD Shrink then does it. btw, DVD Shrink will still not work if I choose Open Disc on the task bar before this little dance.

This little workaround is still doing the job. Many happy backups from DVD Shrink.

It is highly recommended not to use shrink to decrypt movies. It has not been updated in over 6 yrs. You have solved only one of hundreds of tricks shrink does not know. There are still 99 more you will need to figure out, most will be impossible since they are just more advanced encryption algorithms. There is a free version of Defab. Use that to decrypt then use shrink onening in that same file mode to do the rest.
