Hey guys, I've downloaded torrents before as I'm sure many of you have as well and seen some that are direct rips of DVD's, at least according to the file name, and they look GREAT! Yet when I do a DVD rip using DVDShrink without compression, not only do I get a huge file size (4+ gigs) but the picture is streaming quality (blocky squares on dark shades).

My question is, how do people get such great quality rips and still have low numbers in space? Most of the one's I've seen are mkv or avi.

If you want to rip your DVD's to .avi, you need to use a program like AutoGK, not DVD Shrink..

DVD Shrink is meant for backing up your DVD's to either a DVD-5 (probably with compression) or a DVD-9 (no compression).. It creates either Video.TS & Audio.TS folders or a .iso.. either of which are meant to be burned to blank DVD. The file(s) it creates are generally the size of the blank DVD you plan to use so either 4+ or 9+ GB..

Ripping with AutoGK will give you a .avi file with approximately 350MB for every hour of video (so a 2 hour movie is normally 700MB).

You can download AutoGK here at AD and there are also guides available on how to use.

I actually did some poking around last night after my post and found that program but didn't know it could be used strictly for ripping. How longs the wait usually on a quad core ripping hour long dvds?

Sorry only have a laptop with a centrino chip so have no idea what a quad core can do... Does take a couple of hours on my computer, not a quick program, but does what it does very very well.

Last night I converted a vob I had made using dvdshrink on this program andit took about 46 mins according to the log. Would it be best to rip straight from autogk? Or from another program and then convert using autogk?

That don't make sense, the quality should be identical to the DVD if no compression is used.
