I'm really not too sure if I'm posting this in the right forum since it covers a few different topics, so I apologize if it's in the wrong one.
I've been backing up my movies for years and years. It started with DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink, then went on to RipItForMe/Shrink, and for the past few years it's been either DVDFab/Shrink or AnyDVD/Shrink. As of late, I'm having problems with subtitles. I use a pretty regular method; I rip in with DVDFab, then use Shrink to compress the file, and then burn with ImgBurn. The problem I'm having lately is that my DVDs are having forced subtitles that I can't turn off.
In shrink, I always like to check the box for English subtitles, just in case I need them. A LOT of DVDs lately have 2 different English subtitle boxes and if you click on both of them, when you play back the movie the English subtitles will be there and even if you go into the options and turn them off, they still play on.
Also with some, on playback, the subtitles will automatically come on, but if you go into the options, you can turn them off and they stay off. Is there any way to fix this? If there are 2 English subtitle boxes, how do I know which one is the one that makes them forced? And is there a way to prevent them from coming on automatically? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
DVDSubEdit can open the vob files and you can select the subtitle stream and see if the subs are 'normal' or 'forced'.
If they are forced subtitles you can make them 'normal' using DVDSubEdit.
There is also the possibility that there happens to be a set of CC subtitles on the DVD (which won't be listed with DVD Shrink) but if you happen to have set your TV to display CC they will show up.
DVD Shrink has been out of business for about 10 yrs. You can't expect it to handly all these new features. You might consider actually buying a ripper that will be maintained. Otherwise there is DVDSubEdit.
No they have not changed the DVD specs but they invent different copy protection fairly often and plenty over the last 10 yrs. Your error most likely comes from copy protection that missleads the computer DVD reader as to where/what the files are. That is fairly common type of protection. I figure you think you know most everything there is to know about this kind of thing but you don't. After backing up 5k of DVDs I still don't know everything but I do recoginise that simple, common protection trick.
Ok, well I downloaded DVDSubEdit, but I haven't really messed with it yet. Like I said though, I don't rip with Shrink, I'm pretty sure we haven't been able to rip new movies with Shrink for many, many years. I rip with DVDFab, and then I use Shrink for compression so I can put the file on a single-layer disc. I did double check my TV to make make sure the CC wasn't on, and the the subtitles still come up. I might just stop selecting the English subtitle track to be on in Shrink, I very rarely use them, it was always for a "just in case" kind of purpose anyway.
