I have used shrink a lot but on many of the new movies it won't work.
I think it may be a problem with the 5.1 sound or Hollywood has just figured out how to defeat it. I get movies with background sound but no speech. Sometimes the movies slows down until too slow for program to work. Shrink needs to be updated.

Dvd shrink has not been, nor will it be updated. You need to use newer programs to rip your movies, as they contain newer encryptions that dvd shrink can no longer handle with its rudimentary ripper.
Rip with either DvdFab Decrypter (free) or anydvd (payware)
Process with either fixvts or vobblanker (both free)
Compress with either dvd shrink or dvd rebuilder (freeware)
Burn with ingburn (freeware)

Quote: Shrink needs to be updated.
Dvd Shrink will NOT be updated any further. The programmer went on to design Nero Recode.
Dvd Shrink still serves it's purpose, but not as a ripper. Stick with the advice laid out by RTM and you should be just fine.

I disagree to some extent.
I use DVD Shrink with Any DVD in the background, and it works great for 95% of my rips.
Running XP Home on an AMD XP2600, 1024mb RAM, 160gb HDD, 128Mb Video.

Well Shrink won't work by itself for newer encryptions out there. Stop giving bad advice. Rtm27, Iluvendo, and 7thSinger all addressed his question properly.
Shrink will work on older movies and even some new movies since RIAA has almost given up. BUT it's not what's getting your Shrink to work properly for you with 95% movies- that would be AnyDVD that's breaking the code for your Shrink!!! BTW AnyDVD when regularly updated will work for 100% of all movies.

I agree with garmoon:
Any DVD is a ripper.
DVD Shrink is a "old ripper" and lately is used as a "Transcoder".
DVD Shrink still great today for Old Movies and for very few New Movies as a ripper.
The last up-date of Shrink was made in 2004, and that's why Shrink can't rip new encrypted DVD's and need help from others programs to get the rip part done, like AnyDVD or DVDFab.
The creators of DVD Shrink, left behine maybe the most popular ripper program ever (The original Shrink web-site shut-down on August 18th. of 2005, NOT for legal issues.) and they move forward with Nero, also one of the best Programs ever today.

you don't half post some total crap.. nero has nothing whatsoever to do with Lightning UK and never will have.... it's overpriced buggy bloatware.. probably one of the worst programs available for transcoding or burning you can get.
dvdfab IS the update for shrink and decrypter.. and matches up with imgburn.. or don't you ever look out of your ass long enough to realise there is more than bloated closed source drm riddled payware out in the daylight?

Scum101:
I really do not know what you smoke today.....
I am very sorry that you can't afford to buy Nero.....
Nero headquartered are in Karlsbad, Germany and is a world-wide Co. with more that 300 Million people using this program......more people that those using Shrink.
I am sorry to tell you, but Shrink DO NOT HAVE ANY UP-DATE since 2004.
DRM became popular on spring 2002, but on april 2007 (starting with EMI Records Co.) it went down in order to protect consumers rights. Since then, more Companies use DRM on them products but with "hops" allow's.

You are one, rude, uninformed little man...or woman...so let's call you a person(although not a very nice one);or maybe just high on fumes...Between DVD Shrink and Nero, how did you manage to bring Lightning UK into the conversation? Ah, I guess you didn't know LK wasn't involved in DVD Shrink development...he was the smart guy that brought us DVD Decrypter, had nothing to do with DVD Shrink...So, I guess...well, a double face palm for that one...

Nero Recode is in fact a very good program. I have used it extensively for a couple of years(and still do occasionally), since version 7.10.1.2 came out. Never had a problem with it.
DVDFab is NOT the update for DVD Shrink/Decrypter, and ImgBurn has nothing to do with decrypting/transcoding.
Is Nero "bloatware"? Sure, however, many people only use a few features, that's why you have a choice of what to install or not.
The problem with trying to make a "super software package" that does everything, is that many times many/all the parts are "squeaky". Eventually, they patch it up, new version released, they get it right. I don't know about Nero 8, or Nero 9, but Nero Recode in version 7 works perfect on two of my machines(one with Vista, unfortunately). Never used AnyDVD, but I am sure would work great with Nero Recode(same way it works with DVD Shrink).
I am not a Nero funboy, and I do agree that most of the times the free alternative for any software is much better than whatever payware- ImgBurn in case, maybe the best burning software out there. Nowadays I only backup maybe one DVD a month(I do mostly Avi/divx), so I don't replay much, but sometimes people talking out of their arses just piss me off.
Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!
