I would like to add:

The Greasy covering layer of the Vaseline is what it repair the writed surface.

Do not try, tooth-Paste, Banana, Microwave, a pickle or else ($).

Good luck !

A few things...

1) The logo is not the mirror, there is foil that has been stamped that holds the digital information. This is near the logo side.

2) Vaseline does not have the refractive index of the carbonate plastic so it can not repair anything. The effect is either a clean or just that you rerun the process and you get lucky. I suspect if you used dishwashing deturgent you would reach the same level of success. I can usually recover 19 out of 20 badly scratched disks this way. I bet that is better success rate than the Vaseline. Deturgent is a better cleaner than Vaseline. You are moving or cleaning the dirt out of the scratches.

3) Grease on a disk will ruin your drive eventually. Even with only a thin layer will spin off at those RPMs into your drive.

4)The grinder is 100% effective if the scratch does not go all the way down to the foil. At least my sampling of a few hundered badly scratched disks.

This is from a large sampling of maybe 7,000 disks. I do have some real experiance here.
