Interesting Pissing contest, however, it still has not addressed my question.

I am running ANYDVD in the background with Shrink, have been for a few years. This has of course solved my decryption problems with Shrink. Most new movies compress fine. Yes I am aware of the purest?s 11th commandment , Thou shalt not shrink. But I am not a purest so I have absolution from this sin.

My original question still remains, maybe I just haven?t understood the answer but I don?t think anybody has addressed it, ? What prevents shrink from actually shrinking some titles?? Even when I re-author and drag just the movie to the lefthand structure box, the file size does not change. I don?t have a problem shrinking a movie by 25 % or so, as I said, I am not a purest. But occasionally, as in the screen shot example above, it will not shrink it even thou I have limited the parameters to 4.2.

From RBT316
"1) Dual layer DVD's hold twice the amount and are probably what you're attempting to backup anyway."

Does this suggest that some of the movies are actually coming on dual layer disc so they will not respond to Shrinks default limitation setting? This would actually make sense and maybe is the answer?

yep, that's what i'm suggesting - dual layer source material. On some players there's a little pause as it swaps layers. At any rate, it sounds like you're on the right track to a solution.
As for the pissing contest, i didn't sign up. I know good comedy and it's hard to compete with some idiot pissing into the wind - that's always a good show.

summitboy - the screenshot you posted showed DVD Shrink to be working with 49%, as others have said there's only so far you can Shrink. I can't remember the exact limit (55% springs to mind) but i vaguely recall Shrink giving a warning at or below 55%, but as i very rarely use Shrink anymore i can't remember exactly.
You have three choices as i see it, do movie only mode and remove some of the fluff (in the case of the screenshot there's something like a gigabyte of crap ie menu's and extras ie useless 'padding' (just my opinion) That might help things.

Another option, as stated above, is to use Dual Layer media. That way you can backup the entire disc, with zero compression or loss of any fluff. I have never once felt the need personally to even try a Dual Layer disc, which leads neatly to my third suggestion ~

The third option (the one i choose, i only ever do movie only mode but this is still the option i use) is to use DVD Rebuilder, which can compress video in ways DVD Shrink couldn't dream of. I love DVD Shrink as much as the next man, but it just cannot compete with Rebuilder (Rebuilder encodes, DVD Shrink transcodes, but i digress).

(for movies i only ever use movie only mode and i use Rebuilder for virtually every movie i do, years ago i used DVD Shrink for everything, now it's hardly ever used). For episodic discs i use full disc mode and Rebuilder (with the HC encoder) makes easy work of them and produces fantastic results. For example the Battlestar Galactica boxsets, i did all those with Rebuilder, down as low as 44% and (especially considering that most of the shows are set in space ie a lot of dark scenes) Rebuilder worked miracles with these discs.

There's programs such as CLONEDVD also, though i haven't used that so can't comment on it.

In the compression setting, if you choose "Custom Ratio", it will let you go down to 45%. Like creaky suggested, some movies can only be compressed so much.
You can always compress it twice, if you find the quality still acceptable and all you need is an extra GB or so.

This one is far too simple.

1. Use dual layer blank media and alleviate the necessity of compressing.

2. Use Dvd Rebuilder and believe.

Thanks, Creaky, I guess this is starting to make sense. You have about convinced me that I should try Rebuilder. I currently have v0.98.2 installed from some time back but was intimidated so did not use it.

I went to the Guides and it really looked complicated especially when it appears that in addition to Rebuilder, you need the following

DVD Rebuilder
CCE Basic
Mpeg2Dec3dg
DVD Decrypter
AviSynth 2.5
Mpeg2Dec3dg

You mention Rebuilder Pro so I assume this is different than v0.98.2?

Pro is the paid for version, i can't remember how much now but it's not much at all. 0.98.2 is the free version, i haven't used it so can't comment on it but as far as i'm aware there's a lot of very happy users of it out there.

As to your list ~

CCE Basic - can't remember if that's free (i think it is, i think it comes with 0.98.2); i use HC anway, which is definitely free, see here for example ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/664395
Mpeg2Dec3dg - never heard of it (i don't think so anyway!)
DVD Decrypter - have you not used that before ?, that's a very good ripper that got 'shutdown' and the author went on to create the awesome imgburn, which obviously doesn't rip but is one amazing (free) burning program
AviSynth 2.5 - this is installed by Rebuilder Pro, don't know if it's installed with 0.98.2

It's not complicated at all (far from it), depending on the installer you use it's not different to installing any other program, and configuration isn't too difficult, plus i personally keep most settings on default.
HC encoder is multi-core aware by the way, which helps a lot on my Dual and Quad core machines.

There's some excellent and detailed threads in the Rebuilder forum, have a glance down the first half a dozen pages and you'll find a lot of good stuff.
