I read the only discussion thread that I could find, but it did not answer my specific questions, and I could not see how to add to that discussion. It was called "How can I edit a DVD - remove parts/scenes?" Here is my situation: I have used DVD Shrink to edit out objectionable parts from a PG-13 movie (Transformers) that I wanted to show to my young children. I deleted 58 sections and DVD Shrink created 59 VOB files.

Here are the problems I am having:

1. When I play the movie on my TV/DVD player, it shows sections 1-39 and then section 59 (the end of the movie), so it basically cuts out the whole second half of the movie. I looked at the files on my computer and it shows all VOBs there. When I open the folder using DVD Fab, however, it only lists 1-39 and then 59. Interestingly, when my son was watching section 59 and hit the Previous Scene button, it went back through the scenes (58, 57, etc.) and he was able to watch the movie, but only one scene at a time (after each scene finished, it would jump to scene 59). Is there a 40 VOB limit in DVD Shrink?

2. When I play the movie on my TV/DVD player, there is a slight pause between these VOB files, so the movie is not perfectly smooth. Is there any way to remove the pauses? I thought about putting all of the VOB files together into one large VOB, but I have not found out how to do that yet, and even if I did, I am not sure if that will solve the problem or not.

3. Ideally, after doing all of this work, I would like to save my edits somehow. Is there a way to do a File | Save As and save my Re-Authoring work so that if later I wanted to come back to it and make one small change, I would not have to re-do it all?

Thank you for any help that you can offer me!

Thank you for the idea! I tried Joining VOBS using VOBEdit and IFOEdit (per your link above) but that did not solve the problem where there is a pause between VOB files / sections of the movie. I can live with the pauses though. The biggest problem is #1, where the scenes are not correct. I looked at it some more today. If I press Fast Forward, then it starts over at Scene 1. I can press Next Scene, and it starts over at Scene 1 and advances to as many scenes as necessary while I am holding down the Next Scene button. As soon as I let go of the Next Scene button, and if I try to press it again, then it starts over at Scene 1 again and I can advance to the desired scene. Strangely, it did not seem like the scenes were in order as I was advancing through them. Maybe there is a setting in DVD Shrink somewhere that I am missing? Maybe it has some limitations about how many cuts (re-authoring) you can make? Thanks in advance for any insights!

You can have up to 99 titles on a DVD (you created 59)
The DVD player plays the first title then seeks to the next - hence the pause as the laser jumps around.

Are you editing for audio or visual?

If audio, you should be demuxing the original movie (using PgcDemux) and loading the audio into Audacity.
You can change sections to silence if required and save the audio (you don't cut anything so the audio is still the same length as the video.
Then mux the video to the new audio and create a new DVD (using MuxMan).

If you are editing for video content, open the DVD files using Mpeg2Cut2 (assuming the main title is VTS_01, you would select VTS_01_1.VOB through VTS_01_x.VOB).
Select the bits you want to keep and save as a new MPEG2 file.
Use the likes of DVD Flick to author a new movie (ensure that the Project Settings > Video > Advanced is set to 'Copy mpeg-2 files' to be sure the movie is not re-encoded).

Thank you! So it sounds like I am using the wrong software (DVD Shrink) to accomplish my goal of editing a movie for my children. I will research the software programs that you mentioned above and figure out how to use them. I will respond back in a few weeks and say whether I am successful or not. Thank you!

If you got the video to the point that it just hangs up but you can fast forward past it is good enough for FixVTS to clean up the rest. Shrink was not meant to be used as an editor. It does look like you muddled through OK.

I did try FixVTS again on the edited video, to see if it would clean it up better (fix it somehow), but I didn't notice any changes. I am still having the same problems described above. I have decided to give up since the advice given to me by attar (which I greatly appreciate) was above my head. I'm smart and technical, but I still could not understand the user guides and various instructions that I found online. The learning curve is too steep for me and makes it not worth the effort. But thank you everyone for your help!

Haven't we gone over this already here on this forum?

I'd rather say it's the wrong approach to show children a movie that has content you deem objectionable (for whatever reason).

I was not trying to have a philosophical discussion about whether I SHOULD edit movies or not. That is my choice. I was just asking for help in HOW to do it, since I thought this was a technical advice forum. I am thankful for the technical advice that I received and for the time that was spent in answering my question.
