Amateur Brownie Leader desperately needs help with slideshow!

Hi all I hope someone can help me, and please excuse my very amateur questions.
I foolishly volunteered to put together a slideshow for my Brownie pack and their parentss, to show them what a great time we had on our pack holiday. The girlwho used to do this for us has gone to university.
I have a laptop with Windows 7 and Windows DVD maker, and I can import the photos and music, that's how far I have reached today (it took a while!)
However there doesn't seem to be any way I can add any text apart from a title, I was hoping for a few witty comments thrown in during the show!
Am I missing something, or is it a very basic programme? And if so is there anything out there as a free download for me to use? It would have to be fairly simple and quick, and I have to do this on Thursday!!
Last year's presentation was great - an art student - and I would like to do my best for the girls and their families.

DVD Slideshow GUI is simple and free.
You can load up images and attach subtitles to them.
It will also let you burn the DVD.
