I downloaded a video and it says it uses V/A CODEC : XviD ? ac3 384kbps
AUDIO TRACKS : 1 = English. I hear the intro music, and hear backgrounds noises, but there is NO voice coming from the characters?
I used ConvertX to DVD from VSO. This is about the thrid video I have gotten that has the same problem. Am I missing a codec or something? I have Xvid, DiVix, and FFDShow Codec Pack. Or has the Author just released a messed up title?

If you drag the file onto MediaInfo it should tell you if its stereo or 5.1
Is the problem apparent on the downloaded avi source file when played back on the PC.
Use MediaInfo to compare the audio on the avi files that works and the audio that doesn't.
See if they have a common factor.

I use VLC media player on the PC and I only have stereo speakers.
If the video is 5.1 (like your example) I have change the 'Audio' setting to 'Stereo' else I get the symptoms you describe.

Well attar I have a fresh install of XP that is only a couple of weeks old. First thing I do is install couple burn software programs, my converter apps and codecs. I also hvae K lite pack (klcodec551f)installed. I think one of these codec packs messed something up, just played authored DVD in my entertainment system, and all audio is good. I could try to re-install XP SP2 as it has a lot of sound updates in it.

I just tried to play a couple of video clips save from the net, and I have zero audio, so either my WMP vs 11 is messed up, or I'm missing something simple. Audio from below is from one of the clips. Well something is really messed up, I just tried to play an avi file I watched last week, and there is no sound from the actors, just background noises.

Download VLC or Media Player Classic.
They both use internal codecs for playback.
Neither will install any additional codecs and either can be uninstalled at any time.

I have media player classic installed, and it has the same problem as WMP, no sound or very low sound with the same files. I installed SP3 again, but that fixed nothing. Never had a problem like this before.

Whenever I reinstall XP I must install the sound drivers.
The drivers are either on a CD that came with the motherboard or from the mobo site.
The only other thing is Control Panel > Sounds & Audio > Speaker settings > Advanced, for your speaker set-up.
