Just wondering what could be the problem. I have a fast machine and have a ton of AVI files on my HD that I would like to convert to DVD format (VOB? - or even better an ISO image) and then burn using Nero, or DVD Decrypter (or some ISO burning software).

I have done this using conversion software from Xilisoft, and a couple of others, but it seems that when I try to play the finished copy in either a portable player, or a console, or even a Home DVD Player in the stereo cabinet type, the disc will play sometimes for 40 mins before it freezes up. Sometimes there are scenes that are badly pixilated and then the sound is all out of sync.

I usually burn at 2.4x speed (or whatever the slowest is that I can set my software to). AND, I don't really have anything else running in the background when I burn them.

Can someone recommend the best process to go through to have playable DVDs that will actually work?

There are two disks that are considered consistently reliable:Taiyo-Yuden and Verbatim.

ImgBurn is reckoned the best burning software.

If you insert a blank and run ImgBurn, get past the splash screen and click the 'Device' tab, it will list the speeds that your burner can use on that particular disk.

You don't have to select the lowest speed to get a good burn - but until you know the best setting, you can select a moderate speed.

To slow can be bad as to fast until you find a good speed for your stand alone players is the trick for me 4x and 8x is perfect I'm not in hurry so I stay at 4x if like the speed thing 1/2 the rate is a good rule and for movies I only use verbatim dvd-r I can get my hands on them real easy and they work
