please help me - combining VTS/VOB into one avi file :)

Hi I download films and occasionally one comes in VTS/VOB format and not the usual .avi - These are useless to me as my WD media player won't play them and I can't upload to youtube if I want to. I was told just sit at your computer and watch them in three parts with VLC. No thanks. I was told , just burn them to a DVD. No thanks :) I don't want a dvd I want a file I can put on a usb stick. And I don't want to sit watching 3gb 5gb or 10gb HD films at my computer.
I want to find an easy straight forward way to convert this mess of IFO BUP VTS VOB (none of which I really understand!!!) to a single easy to get along with .avi which I am presuming most uploaders MUST do after they rip their DVD's otherwise ...how do they "arrive" as avi's in the torrent??
yet I am finding it very difficult to find software and instructions to make this happen.
I have tried VOBEDIT with the "join clips" thing and got nothing but a bunch more VTS VOB files! and a few others I have tried as well with no luck. I also want to know how to get any subs files out of there and turn them into an .srt file to go with the .avi.
Am I asking the impossible? thanks for any advice yes I am a fairly basic user but I'm not compltely clueless and willing to read forums try different software etc usually I can work things out but this is not happening for me at the moment.

Run AutoGK
Select the input file from the VIDEO_TS folder, usually but not always, VTS_01_0.IFO
Select the output path and name.
Audio track.
Quality setting.
Add the job to the queue (if you have other movies to convert, repeat the steps).
Start.

thanks I did download this and try it, (its confusing on forums as this program is described as a DVD ripper and I think to myself...well I dont want to rip a DVD I just want to combine and play these things in an avi. ) !!
Anyway as I said I did try it yesterday - I cant rememeber what happened now exactly but I didnt end up with an AVI thats for sure..
OK so moving on ... I dont have an IFO in this VTS video folder ( have in fact three of these VIDEO TS "situations" and none of them have IFO ...only all the various VTS parts and BUP) so what do I use here ?
I will give it another go if you can advise which bit to use if not IFO
- btw I notice it says to download codec for xVId separately - do I need to do that? because when I clicked on that link on the link you provided, it said "Page not found" - so I dont have that codec and the program actually just froze on me - would that be why? If I need it where else could I get it.

The DivX codec is not required.
AGK includes the XviD codec (which is DivX backwards).
'Ripping' a dvd is copying the files from the disk and implies that those files will be placed in a folder named 'VIDEO_TS' and will include .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files.
Note that vob, ifo and bup are extensions to the file names as in:
If you do not see the extensions then it's perhaps that they are turned off in the folder view.
In that case you click Tools > Folder Options > View and uncheck the box to unhide them.

ok I had a lot of trouble finding that Hide Extensions thing in "Appearances/Personalisation" !!!
but now I have done that - I have followed your instructions in AutoGK
should I be able to see something happening? how long does it take?
It just appears to be stuck and doing nothing - this is in the log window:

12 seconds?
Am I supposed to combine these IFO files first or something ? because I see in your example it says 1:54 minutes which seems right
Or does it automatically pick up the others as it goes - anyway it still appears to be doing nothing
......OK that has now crashed and I can't even open AutoGK
I think there's something wrong it - will uninstall and download again (I think I've had this trouble with Auto GK before when I tried to do this ages ago is it usually stable?)

That isn't twelve seconds, it's 0.12 seconds.
That's why AGK isn't showing any audio.

whatever - it's still wrong it should be the length of the film right?
why did it come up like that when I put the IFO file in is the question
it's still only a tiny part of what needs to be converted
any ideas?

There's a typical listing of a 1.5 hour dvd movie.
Note the circled files are 1GB in size.
Is this similar to yours?

Yes I do have VOB files just like that
Yes that did work with the five second movie thank you, the audio came up and it made the avi
However the problem still remains that when I put the IFO file in from my film I still get .12 and no audio options and it does not seem to start up at all in the conversion
in short...it's not working
perhaps the film is faulty

In AGK, try loading the first .VOB file - that would be VTS_01_1.VOB
If subsequent VOB files exist for that Title (VTS_01_02.VOB VTS_01_03.VOB etc)they will be picked up automatically by AGK.
The drawback to this is that if any subtitles exist in the movie they will not detected with this method.
You might want to try simply selecting a vob using a decent media player on your PC to see if it can play the content.
A decent media player would be VLC or MPC.

Yes I know I can play the different parts with VLC - what I want to do though is put the films on a USB and play them in my WD media player/tv
I really hate watching films on my computer Im amazed so many people seem happy with this method
Im also having trouble with AGK it keeps crashing and I have to reinstall
Anyway... will try it again with another film (yes they are subtitled :( )

OK MakeMKV worked - yes quite happy with mkv thanks
I used that and it kept the subs intact
I had no luck at all with AutoGK and kept getting "can't access that file as it is being used in another process"
??
then it would freeze that happened on a couple of different films
I tried everything
anyway you were a great help, thanks
