When I asked Orange to unlock my E-71 (contract, new phone in my name), I was told it would cost £20, take 7 to 14 days, and necessitated contacting Nokia. I spoke to Nokia, who said that the phones were supplied to Orange unlocked and that it was the Orange software that locked the phone to their network. Nokia therefore would be unable to supply an unlock code, even if they wanted to. I spoke again to Orange, who confirmed that what Nokia had said was correct, that Orange supplied the unlock code, and that Nokia unlock codes were simpler than many others to retrieve from the Orange database. Apparently, Samsung phones are difficult to unlock, for some inscrutable oriental reason. I have escalated this as a complaint, as they were telling porkies the first time, but expect to receive a call and an unlock code, hopefully gratis, before long.

Time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted.
