Buying used PSP 2000, how do I check if it is moddable?

I've never used a PSP before and need to know how to quickly check if it can be modded before buying it. I know it's the fat version of the 2000 series.

Do I only need to check the firmware version? How do I do this? I've seen how to determine this from box codes but the box isn't included.

Thanks and sorry if this information is readily available, I did try searching beforehand.

Found out that it has official sony firmware 3.80. Can this be permanently modded?

"fimwares higher than 3.50 you will need to use the pandora battery method"

I can't find details on whether this will be permanent and if there is a maximum firmware it will work on.

ahh boy well this is going back aways but as i recall the rule of thumb at the time was anything lower than 4.0 was "most likely" pandora'able

i remember when i got my PSP2000 off amazon and it came with 3.95 and was moddable... so you have a pretty good chance of yours being a non-ta88v3 psp

if the serial number is hu 20000000 or less its a sure thing, if the date code is less than 8c its a sure thing. look for those 2 things and you will be ok.

yeh my serial number is higher than that and it was moddable. . . .

really the only way to know for sure is to put a pandora battery in with a working MMS and see if it starts up

I bought it yesterday based on the firmware version alone. The Pandora battery made with my friends PSP worked great. I just checked and the serial number was less than 20000000. Thanks for the help all!
