ok my friend gave 2 psps to fix. they both dont play umd's. one i did long ago to 5.00 m33-6 and one origional firmware 3.52. the 5.00 m33-6 does not play umd's it keeps showing the round loading circle at the bottom right and it never loads up, and the origional psp 3.52 does not show anything and does not load up umd eitha. ok i heard dark alex has stopped so dont know what to do anymore, how can i
1. get umd's to load
2. what is the latest custom firmware and can i update from 5.00 m33-6
3. how do i make the 3.52 to custom firmware, even if to just 5.00 m33-6 to this one too. i can not remember how to do anything on psps anymore i forgot everything

Sounds like they both need new drives (worst case), the first one has a dead drive motor (the one that shows nothing) and the other one's laser is dead. Did your friend drop those PSPs, they aren't shock-resist? Or did someone open the PSPs up? Could be that the drive in the one that shows nothing simply wasn't reconnected.

5.50 GEN-D2 and there are enough tuts on here how to upgrade from 5.00 m33-6.
