newbie upgrade from 3.71 m33-2

hiya
this is for my son as i know nothing about psp stuff in general
i have messed around with dds lite's 360's with no problems.
he has a psp model 1003 which when i look in system information it says 3.71 m33-2 and he want's to upgrade to whatever the latest or best is and would like to know how to do it,i have read numerous articles on how to do this but i am unsure as some say downgrade to 1.50 and others say only upgrade to this and then to this firmware instead of doing it in one jump so to speak.
like i say i am a novice to this and don't realy want to brick a perfectly good psp.

ok i have gone to 5.00 m33-6 i only need to know how to upgrade to 5.50 gen d is is the process the same as the way i did the it last time ie (download 5.50 sony original firmware and then rename it to something and place it in update folder of custom firmware)
or is it more involved like other threads i have read like a,b,b2,d,d2 as some jump a few steps.

You can go to Gen D - then to genD2, the D2 is an update file only. Loads of sites host the Gen D bit (you do not need the Sony firmware anymore unless you are going to downgrade back to M33

so i can go straight to 5.50 gen d from 5.00 m33-6 without installing original firmware first and then flashing.
do i just place firmware in update folder and put it on my memory stick in the game folder as last time and just boot from there

Yes Update folder in the psp/game folder

Run the update - get to gen d

add d2 update as above

Run update

Format the memory stick (or delete the files)

Check your recovery setting (press select when in the main PSP menu (ie no game running)) - need default speed, usb = memory stick and M33 driver (although the driver changes for some games)
