PSP 2.50 firmware........Do I need custom firmware and which one?

Hello All

I am just looking into playing homebrew games on my PSP......I have a PSP - 1003 and it is running firmware 2.50.

I have had a read of several sites containing info on this and it mentions a pandora battery and magic stick, I believe I don't need either of these as mine is an old PSP (Correct????)

I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that I just need to get a custom firmware installed to allow me to play free games.....My question is do I need to downgrade to a firmware below my current one or do I update to the 5.03 or above versions and if so which one is right and does it matter??

I am still going to read he threads left by you peeps but would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction.
