i've got a piano black slim psp 2004 with date code 8c. can a custom firmware be put on that? some guys are 'selling' the service of putting a cfw on these models. so is it possible? i already downgraded a fat (1004) with one of the tutorials, but is it the same for the 2004? and, can i put the 'fat' battery into the slim psp and / or put the 'slim' battery in the fat psp? i ask because i have a pandorra battery, it was a spare one of my old fat. can i use that fat battery in the slim versions also? only to down/up-grade to a cfw off course

it is running OFW 5.50

The 2000 Series Date Codes go as follows:
7C: Hackable.
7D: Hackable.
7(Any later Letter): Hackable.

8A: Hackable.
8B: Hackable.
8C: Has Very High Chance that it is Unhackable.
8D: Unhackable.

I have used a phat battery in a slim (be careful not to move when updating)it is just too big to fit in the slot so has to be held at an angle.

The big answer is possibly - no real answer without opening to see

All the guides say do not start unless you are 100% sure that you PSP is hackable - by that I think it will brick (forever) the PSP.

There are currently no easy exploits in 5.5 firmware so you cannot run pspident, this checks and gives you the board version on the screen.

If you have Medal of Hero's UMD then there is an exploit you can get to run (google will tell you all)

Otherwise the easiest way is to open the PSP and manually check. The type is written on the board.

UNLESS - you have the original box?? the codes from that will tell you what the firmware was at shipping 3.?? and your fine, 4.01 - buggered

it is a second hand psp... no, i do not have the box. and will, off course, not open up an almost new psp. i will try the identifier exploit (in the link you provided in your first reply) to see if it is hackable or not...

thanks for your info
