psp won't update from memory stick

Psp currently has version 3.71 (thats all it says in system info) Have a sandisk 2g memory stick pro duo. I can save music and pictures and the psp will read those. I have downloaded two different updates the newest thru wireless the other 4.05 thru usb.. the info goes onto the card and will read it up until press x for install. then it says error 8005321 unable to read memory stick. I have tried a friends sony memory stick and get the same thing. this is a psp 1001... any ideas

i also have down a factory reset with the psp and reformated the card and still doesn't work.
