Hello everyone. Simply looking for some guidance regarding my psp.

I did the best I could to research on this before resorting to a forum for help. I am sure that everyone has heard plenty of dumb questions and are sick of it lol.

As I said, I did my best, I am simply not that tech savvy. A lot of the terms make little sense but I will explain all that I know as best I can.

First off, what I am trying to accomplish: Giving my psp the capability to run emulators, getting those emulators, and playing old school games on my psp. Pokemon games of all generations possible, Mortal Kombat Trilogy from PS1, and Legend of Zelda, A link to the past from Super NES in particular.

I have seen that usually in order to give useful advice you need to know what kind of psp and software version is being discussed. I tried to get emulators years ago and realized it would have been a lot easier if I never upgraded the software, so since then I never have, anyway, Below is the specs that I believe you would ask for about my psp.

It is the original chubby kind. And the software version says its Version 3.11

Anyway. I looked around on how to modify it, but I simply am not good enough with all of the terms. I don't speak computer very well. I only have very basic knowledge on how all of that stuff works. To give you an idea of my level of knowledge I will state what I understand.

I have found that there are many ways to modify PSP's through the use of programs, special batteries called "Pandora batteries" Special memory sticks, etc. I have also found that if any of this is done incorrectly it can permanently ruin your psp. Thus why I haven't tried just figuring it out on my own. I have found that pending on your psp's type and software version, different ways to modify it are available. However, the way in which I should go about doing so given my type of psp and software I do not know. And even if I did, I doubt I would understand the instructions as I still lack a lot of the basic vocabulary.

Words like "Firmware", "Homebrew software", and other technical terms tend to confuse me. Generally, I understand a bit. Firmware I have no idea. Homebrew software is simply software created by someone in their home--- not a company yes? Its a matter of clarification and dumbing things down. There's a good chance I know a lot more that I realize. I just need a little guidance. I believe simply having the ability to talk back and forth and ask questions will make this process a lot easier.

Again I apologise for the newbie questions, and thank you for your time

EDIT: I did a bit more research around these forums to try and make answering my questions shorter and more simple for you guys. I came across this guide http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/781188 I flipped through it and unless I am missing something, my psp is compatible with this. My questions are: Is this method any good? Would it be the most efficient? Will it yield the results I want or help in the process? Would it void the warrenty (No big deal just curious)? And am I right in saying my psp is compatible with it?

Regardless, still take into account my questions and comments from before. Given that I am still unsure what "Hacking" a PSP does. To my knowledge it is what makes emulators, roms, and other custom home made applications compatible with the psp. Let me know if I am right or wrong about all that. Maybe an explanation about the entire process would help too. Its not that I dont get stuff like this. I just need it explained to me. Im not really good with reading other peoples conversations.

Anyway, just thought that might make things easier for those who try and help. Thank you again.

First off to answer your basic questions:
The "Firmware" is what you call your software version, it's the basic operation system of your PSP. There are original (or official) firmwares, that were created by sony, referred to as OFW. You can't play any homebrew applications (non-official applications), backups or PS1 games on them (exept for these PS1 games you paid for and downloaded from the official sony store). Also there is custom firmware (or CFW) that will allow you to do all the above said. Hacking your PSP means putting custom firmware onto it. The guide you found will do that for you, so yes, it is any good. In your case I would put on custom firmware 5.00 M33-6.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Awesome! Apparently I did understand much better than I thought and was simply having a moment of self doubt. I am much more confident in what I am doing now.

I guess my plan now is to hack my psp using the method in the link mentioned in my first post involving the ChickHEN thing. I have just a few more questions before I get to this.

First, using this method, is there a risk of bricking my psp or damaging it another way using this method?

Secondly, will attempting/making these modifications void the warranty on my PSP? I now ask for a reason. Reason being that my volume buttons are broken and my research tells me that the only way to fix them is via opening the psp, in which I would need to break warranty stickers and void my warranty.
If hacking the PSP in this way will void the warranty already, breaking the stickers and attempting to repair the buttons (Seems rather simple and a matter of cleaning) would sound like a decent idea.
But if hacking using ChickHEN doesn't void the warranty, I rather let my volume buttons stay broken and keep my warranty and either leave my sound at default volume or go and find a mod that will make me able to adjust volume with other buttons (I have seen them around, but if anyone here knows of a good one, let me know where to get it if you can.)

Lastly, I am going to make another thread here (I would put it in a troubleshooting spot but I couldnt find one and didnt really know where else to put it) asking to see if there are other ways to solve my sound problem along with a few other quirks that my PSP has. Anyone who would like to be awesome and help me out with those aswell feel free to track my other thread down. It would be greatly appreciated! I would just add it to my post here but I want to keep this thread about my attempt to mod my psp.

Again thank you for your time and effort!

Theoretically it would void your warranty. Theoretically because I highly doubt that your PSP still is under warranty, because the longest warranty period I know of is 2 years (and as far as I know that's not in the US). The PSP 1000 model (the first, fat one) you seem to have has been out of production for atleast three years now. Seeing your firmware version it is even older, so there simpy is nothing to void anymore. If you really feel up to the task of doing this you can remove the faceplate (7 screws, 4 of them on the back (3 visible, one under the warranty seal under the battery) and 3 at the sides of your PSP, all visible) and check the connection of the button bar to the mainboard, maybe even remove it once and reattach it, it's only plugged in, maybe the connectors aren't as good as they have been. You have to lift up the screen for that, be careful not to damage the wires.

Mmm... wow duh. Good point. Mine is well over 2 years old. So warranty is no big. And the sound issue is rather irritating.. Fixing it seems to be a simple matter so I might go for that. So if I decide I am up to it I will go for it or look for an alternative.

So that still leave my other and last question:

Is there a risk of bricking or ruining your psp when using OFW 5.03 and ChickHEN like there is when using other methods?

If you don't follow the guides there is a chance of bricking. But even if you manage to brick it, all you need is a Pandora Battery and you can unbrick it. With the old fat PSPs there is almost no way of destroying it permanently when installing custom firmware (exept from maybe throwing it to the ground during the process).

Well the guide seems pretty straightforward now that I have my vocab down so I think I am all set. Thank you so much for all of the advice! That's it regarding this. Thanks again!
