First you need to update it to custom firmware 5.00 m33-6.

To do this you need a couple of files.
You need to download the 5.00 official firmware LINK
Then you need to download the 5.00 m33 patch LINK

Make a folder on your computer called "UPDATE"
Extract the files from 5.00 official firmware. There should be a file called "EBOOT.PBP". Rename it to "5.00.PBP", and drag it into your "update" folder.
Then extract the 5.00 m33 patch. Get the "EBOOT.PBP" from it and put it in the "update folder.

Connect your psp to your computer. Open "PSP", then open "GAME". Copy and paste your "UPDATE" folder, that has "5.00.PBP" and "EBOOT.PBP", into it.

On your psp, navigate to game, then select "UPDATE" from the games list on your memory stick.

Go through the updating process. When it is finished updating, go to system settings, then to system information. Your psp software version should say "5.00 M33".

You need to update to 5.00 m33-4 now.
Download the m33-4 updater LINK
Extract the files.
Put the update folder on your psp memory stick in the game folder.
Run the updater.
When it is finished, go to system information to check if it says "5.00 m33-4"

Now you need to update to 5.00 m33-6.
Download the m33-6 updater LINK
Extract the files.
Put the update folder on your psp like last time.
Run the updater.
When it is finished, check and make sure you are on "5.00 m33-6"

Congratulations! You are now on the best custom firmware released. But if you are going to play games that require 5.XX up firmware, then you need to update on last time.

You need to update m33-6 with Prometheus-3
Download Prometheus-3 for 5.00 m33-6 LINK
Extract the files.
Put the folder with the EBOOT in it, in the PSP/GAME folder.
Run it like you did the updates.
To check and see if it is installed, your system software should now read "5.00 Prometheus-3"

Even though it says 5.00 Prometheus-3, you are still runing 5.00 m33-6, just an updated version of it.

Now that you have done all of this, your psp can play all ISOs up to date, all homebrew, and PSX games.

There are plenty of tutorials around on how to start using 5.00 m33-6, so enjoy your hacked psp.

My bad. It might just be Prometheus-2 that re-names your system software.

Hi,

After I have finished all procedures to have 5.00 m33-6, the system is showing 5.XX Kernel. Although it works to Ben 10 Ultimate Alien does not work to the James Cameron AVATAR (error 80020148). So, I have tried to run the upgrade to Prometheus-3. But when I copy the extract file with "EBOOT in it", the update rotine does not come as happened in the previous updates steps. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!

You have to be on custom firmware or a hen to update to a new custom firmware. You are on official firmware. You cant run homebrew with out having a homebrew enabled PSP. Can you not google this crap?

Or he simply didn't read your whole instructions (which were quite good by the way). Never expect a noob to do the logical things.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

wow! i asked a simple question because i ran into a problem after following the instructions that you had posted above.
for everyone's information, i did try looking it up. i know you can't run homebrew firmware. my problem was that I was on homebrew 3.90 m-33 and then when i tried to do the update that you posted (which was good) it somehow only updated to the official firmware and i couldn't seem to figure out why or how and more importantly how if any way i could get back to the one i had.

i may be a noob but i do try to search for some answers first. many times i don't totally understand what i find, so it leads be back to asking questions.

when i first came on this site a couple years ago when i first started with my psp, ppl were a lot more friendly and not ripping someone for asking a question in which he could not find an answer or didn't understand the answer.

I understand you. The problem is that you are one of the few exceptions. Most people come on here, don't bother using the forum search or google and ask a question that has been answered about 1000 times already. And after you help them you don't receive a response, not to speak of a thank you or something like that.
To answer your question, you can do a downgrade for free, there is a good tutorial on ChickHEN in this forum.

no problem - i understand the misunderstanding and frustration.
i've stopped using my psp for a while now (last updated my homebrew prob like 2007 or 2008) so i haven't kept up on all the updates and new info - not that i understand half of the stuff i find. i just hope i follow instructions and get to the final destination! it worked pretty well up until this point. this is the first time an update didn't work for me and it was frustrating not understanding/knowing what i did wrong.
Thanks for the info. I will try it when i get a chance and let you know how it works.
