ok you have to have a VIA ( thats a brand like intel) SATA(name of the plug in)chipset or PCI card for it to communicate with the 79. I think thats why your getting an error you can pick up a Via Sata PCI card for cheep. If you obtain that and it still does not work, make sure your using port one and you have the sata cable plugged in the opitical drive right?

Well you need Slax 2.1 to put a Hitachi into mode B, and your ICH* chipset should work fine. VIA chipsets don't work well with Hitachi drives.

I guess what I meant was, use you primary SATA port, it might be labelled SATA 0. You may have to move your HDD over to SATA 1 or
another available SATA port.

i am having something kinda the same. the only difference is that i can get my hitachi 0079fl into bmode and windows can see the drive and read from it but i can not dump the raw fw for the life of me. i have slax 2.1 i also have the 79 unlock program with the sound file that you have to play once all the way threw and then a quick play pause the second time around. i just dont see what i am doing wrong here. This is the tut i am using http://www.teamxmods.com/79-hitachi-flas...sskey-tutorial/ and i am fallowing it to the T. still nothing. anyone have any ideas for me to get this to work the right way. i have used 3 different os' xp64 vista 32 and 64. thanks for anyone who can give me some insite on this problem i am having.

i have a via chipset pci card and have flashed loads of 79 drive using it,the only problem i had was with a 79FL that was a bugger to flash ( reading the firmware was ok but when using firmware toolbox 4.8 it would crash when trying to make the hacked firmware which i solved by just downloading the same version as a file got corrupted )
