well the main difference is the fact that the first guide doesn't use diodes, and makes connections to different points on the board. Does it really matter or is it just a different method? Has any one followed the first diagram? Will one diagram enable me to do something that the other wont?
The first guide was when the JTAG hacked first became available, from reading posts I think it would cause problems booting XBR for people, and the DB25 cable diagram would have problems with flashing. The second guide is the newer version of how to JTAG and is recommend to use, if you chose to use the other one and it works for you then great, but if you run into problems then you will have to change things anyway. I would just change over to using the afterdawn guide to avoid any problems, I followed the afterdawn guide and I was 100% successful the first time through it.
The only difference is bridging 4 & 7 of the JD2D as opposed to running JD2D's #4 up to J1F1's #5 with a resistor. I've never tried the former, but have successfully done 8 with the latter (afterdawn) technique. I suggest you do the same.

Yeah, this is a retro-post, but I just wanted the say thanks for the advice. I did like you guys suggested, and went with the AD tut and it worked flawlessly - well after I accidentally soldered my connections to the wrong bank of eyelets- set me back about 2 hours, lol.
So if anyone is reading this with the same problem - go with the new method.
