What kind of burner do you have? how much did it cost? Experiment with various disks. What may work for me over and over again, may not work for you.
Never tried Ritek. I get what's in the store -- which means Memorex. I won't buy TDK's though. I mean I could try, if nothing was available locally... But as long as Memorex is available for .50 to 1.00 a disk, I'll get those. Plus, you don't have to order them on line. All stores have them.

I'll have to nod my vote for Memorex as well. Those that have to Use Verbs have cheap burners. If you have a cheap burner, you may have to get more expensive disks.
100 Back ups for me -- maybe two coasters. All Memorex. Sony external burner.
All of this talk about "if you're a real modder..." Please...
Have a cheap burner you'll be lucky to burn to any media let alone read any..lol..there's no substitute for quality it's not just about being able to get a disc to write & work afterwards,you want that same disc to be able to be read 5-10 years down the track & so far the verbs haven't let me down whether single layer or dual & when it comes to dual layer media you'll have a dam sight more read issues with it than you would single so quality is even more important so 200 backups = 200 successful burns & still working = 200% success rate over a 5 year period & counting,i could tell ya bout my ps2 collection of 400 + but that'd just be showing off
ps: all verbatim

im thinking of getting 5x 10 pack of verbs for backups which will cost me $100 AUD but compared to Ritek which is $36 for a pack of 50 is much cheaper.
@bradonba
and how were they? any problems with it?
@scorpNZ
Other than verbs do you recommend anything else?

If your going to burn your games on a disk for the backups why would you go with a cheap media that will eventually in turn force you to replace the drive in a shorter period than it should be?
Use verbs, yes sometimes you can't find them locally for a decent price but the price keeps the disks working long after your drive dies. i have disks from two years ago that were burnt on verbs and still work. They been beaten to hell some of them but never the less the work. One has a gash in the middle and it freezes after about 2 hours of horde mode (gears 2) but still it works.
In reality any media works but verbs are of the highest quality since every one is identical but what you use is up to you. I will pay 40 bucks for 20 verbs before i pay 10 for 100 (insert media here)

it is for the best practice. If you mess up a verb then it is your burner or your not burning correctly. I had to put the layer break into the disk myself just to get it to work. Instead of using the .dvd i use the .iso. Just my burner on that one though.

No it won't make any difference. Honestly i prefer setting the break myself and i use IMGburn. Just be sure you do run every .ISO through ABGX if you plan on any online gaming.

There was an article one of the AD members had a link to last year where the head explained the quality of verbs,it was in a thread about burn speeds,the verbs can be burnt at full rated speed without error in fact he recommended it,for the 360 discs i do burn at the max rated tho th discs we get here are the singapore 2.4x

When I said real modder, I was referring to people who flash a lot and/or make numerous backups for multiple people/customers.
Originally posted by b1gh3ad: what do you think of ritek? are they ok or are they crap?
Ritek is middle of the pack. In other words, average. They work, but you are not guaranteed to have any kind of archival lifespan. You have to pay a little extra for that, which is why Verbatim and Taiyo-Yuden cost a little bit more (and I do stress the word "little").

A guy who understands the point.

Not calling you a liar, but I find that hard to believe. Then again, it's not "Use Verbatims" that's stressed. What is stressed is "Use Verbatims made in Singapore". Sing Verbs are ALWAYS identical, nothing ever changes. The dye, the plastic, the mfg process, the quality, nothing. That's the reason they ALWAYS work. The same can't be said for Memorex because you may get a spindle that works, then another, then the next may not work. The reason is because Memorex outsources to various manufacturers, who don't use the same materials or manufacturing process as each other.
Example:
Most of the Memorex I burn for my daughter are identified by ImgBurn as as "Disc ID: RITEK-S04-66". These work pretty well for her. But some of the "same" Memorex identify as "Disc ID: MBIPG101-R10-65". These fail more often when burning, and also when she tries to play them. Memorex also has a few other ID codes that I can't think of right now.
5 years+, my Singapore Verbatims ALWAYS have an identification code of "Disc ID: MKM-001-00" which means Mitsubishi always make them identical. And this particular disc is VERY compatible with the Xbox 360 and long lasting, which all brands are not.

My point from the beginning. Unfortunately too many people think $1.25 is too much to pay for a game that's guaranteed to work and guaranteed to last.

Yes. connecting to Live for ANY reason or amount of time can lead to banishment.

Just pay more if you get issues with the cheap ones! There's the easy answer... I would get better/more expensive disks if I had issues with Memorex... Which I have bought several hundred of, from varios stores -- and the theory that one bunch will work, and another won't has yet to apply to my burning success. If I get a disk read error reading a memorex, or a Verb, it's the laser going out... Test on an original, same error -- it's not the disks.
