I have not yet taken apart my old xbox 360 (I am away from my house), so I do not have any idea what DVD drive it is but it is one of the models that didn't support HDMI hookups. I bought it in 2007, it got the RROD around 2008 and I had it "fixed" in early 2009 but I think they just sent me a new one, judging by the looks of it.
I just bought a xbox 360 transfer cable, haven't opened it yet cause I'm not sure if I can flash my firmware with it. I tried searching and it seems really unclear and I couldn't find any tutorials with a straight answer, yes or no. So I thought it'd be good to ask on a forum. I do have all the torx screwdrivers and whatnot, I just need to know if I can flash my firmware with a transfer cable since it seems to be doing the same thing as a crosswired SATA cable (I think thats what it's called) but its hooking up to the USB instead of the harddrive slot in a computer.

Thanks in advance!
its the disk drive you mod not tha hdd? if it is a samsung or benq u can just use a standard sata cable and power the xbox, if its a liteon then u will need a probe of some kind, bought or homemade, work the same. or you can buy things like LTclips that require no soldering etc. search for the "jungleflasher tutorial" it will tell you everything you need to know m8.
