Hi all...new to the forums. I tried searching this, but have come up empty so far. My son's box suffered the RROD last week. I bought an online "fix" for $30 & started taking the xbox apart myself. I got to the portion where you are supposed to remove the x-clamps, & pretty much realized I was likely in over my head & decided to scrap the repair myself. I looked on Craigslist & found a ton of people willing to repair it for anywhere from $30-50. I picked one at random ( a $40 "fixer") & contacted him. He agreed to repair it, & I dropped it off at his house the next day. He says I can pick it up in an hour or so, but I advised him I'd pick it up the next day. I called him the next day (yesterday), but got VM which was full. I sent him a text asking him to call me. No call. I try to call again today & get the same, so I sent him a couple more texts. He finally texts me back & says he lost my #, & that my motherboard is scratched. I ask him what that means. No response now for 2 hours. Now, I was extremely careful when taking this thing apart & the pics he sent me show a pretty sizable scratch that I would surely have seen when I was boxing up the parts to take him. I get a very bad feeling about this. Is this a common thing? Is it possible I did this, & just didn't notice? Is there any way to confirm this is actually my motherboard & he has not swapped it on me? In hindsight, I realize I should have marked mine somehow, but it didn't occur to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...//TJ

A scratch on the motherboard pretty much renders it useless I'm afraid. Did you test the Xbox after re-assembling it again?
As far as identification goes, the motherboard revision should match up with the manufacturing date on the back. If you remember when you bought it (Month and year) you can match that up with the MFR (Manufacturing) date on the back of the Xbox case, and in turn, the Xbox motherboard that should go along with the case.
Let me know how it goes.

yea man i have alot of drops off and tell the customer to write down there serial # down etc,but its easy just to change the casing to another no working xbox and fix the one you have and sell it,alot of people have done that before,we would let the person in our house and do the xclamp fix there so they could see were not doing any shady tricks, now that i have a reflow station i tell then to drop it off,but you also gotta remember that you gotta have your name out there so people can trust you, takes time be we have gotten the trust and have fixed many consoles, next time write down your info take pics of your mobo

Thanks for the responses. I am picking the box up tomorrow & will check the ID's then. Coincidentally, when I finally got a hold of this guy, he has a repaired unit he will sell me for $60...//TJ

I am willing to bet that he is simply trying to sell your fixed one back to you after swapping out the stuff or simply changing out the cases. He is a quack. There is probably a reason behind the swap. Did you play on live at all? maybe Jtag was behind it.

Impossible!!! You may be able to find an working Xbox (not Xbox360) for for 40 or less, but they since long discontinued so you won't find a new one.
