I have the Hitachi GDR-3120L ROM 0078FK which I can't seem to flash. First I tried it on a Mach Speed PT88AS board with the SLAX cd. After runing the CD I boot into windows and Device Manager says for my SATA ports Device Cannot Start Error 10. Then I try the cross wire method. I know that the drive is in Mode B because the power light is flashing and I heard the drive spin up. Same problem.
I switch over to an ASUS P5K-E board and try the cross wire method. Drive is in Mode B becase the power light is flashing but the computer does not even see the drive. I know the SATA port is working because I had a hard drive plugged in and I just swapped it with the DVD ROM drive.
What am I doing wrong? This is really bugging me and I hope someone can help me.

I know that the computer is not seeing the drive because I can't see it in Device Manager. I also cannot see it in My Computer. What do you mean scratch method 1? Don't try the SLAX CD?

no scratch the cross wire method, sounds like slax is working fine as long as you got the responses of the drive as being in mode b. did you try a different sata port? i know the one you are using works, but it might need to be in the first or the last one? just guessing at this point, as i dont use my mobo to flash.

I tried both SATA ports. I even uninstalled and reinstalled them. I'm thinking that something is messed up with my Windows install. You know for a fact that my chipset is supported right?

Are some DVD drives easier to flash than others?

very much so, sammys, benq's and hitachi's are all basically fairly easy to do, although there are a couple of hitachi's that might give you a fit.

Which drive is the best in your opinion? I have a system with a Samsung (Refurb system), Hitachi (My original one) and a BenQ (Refurb system). From what I've noticed, BenQ doesn't read DVD-R. Samsung drives get stuck when ejecting. Hitachi drives work perfectly. From what I've read, Hitachi drives are the worst.
BTW, my drive magnet on the top of my Hitachi drive was re-glued on and I put a piece of sheet metal over it so it won't fall off. I also made a little indent exactly in the center of the metal thing that holds the magnet so it catches a bit better. Could be why my Hitachi is working excellently. Also all systems were refurbished by me so I did a little better job than microshit.
