Ok guys my laser has arrived. I found a pic of the laser on google and it has an arrow pointing to the solder point but the arrow is covering it so i cant see it very well. I do NOT have a soldering iron. I remember somebody suggesting to heat the end of a screw on the stove? Any other workaround for removing it? I dont want to break anything so any tips will be rewarded with...thank you! LOL! ;-)

Heating a screw might work.

A soldering iron is literally less than $10, however.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

I just looked at it. It is TINY! I had to use a magnifying glass. Am i trying to remove it totally or uncover something?

Ok, i just looked at the old laser (duh!) and i see the 3 points im trying to uncover. Still not sure if im trying to just melt the solder off as apposed to breaking it off but thats what it sounds like?

Yes, you need to melt the solder off.

Radioshack sells soldering irons for $8 and little sucker tools that resemble the thing you use to suck the boogers out of a kid's nose for like $3. You can melt the solder with the iron and then use the sucker thingy to suck the melted solder off.

The second part isn't really necessary, but makes things easier.

Instead of using a desoldering pump, use a desoldering braid. It is pretty much copper braided wire soaked in flux. It will suck the solder up in less than a second. Just make sure the braid is hot when you pull it away from the point because you can damage traces if you go yanking on something that's accidently soldered.

Good advice. I'm going to have to pick a desoldering braid up the next time I am at Radio Shack.... or more likely Fry's.

If you have a multimeter, check the pot setting of the drive. It may be out of whack.

No problem. Good luck.

By the way, you should know going in that the drives being sold "brand new" on eBay are not. They are of good quality, but not new.
