With the recent drop in price, I am thinking of getting a xbox finally. But I dont know if the dvd drives can still be modded. What is the best one to try to get? Anyway to know what drive is inside just from looking at the box alone, to say see where it was made in? Thanks.

No.
Open the box, remove the faceplate, peek through the oval hole in the DVD drive:
Yellow wires = Lite-On (most likely)
White wires = BenQ (possible, but not likely)
IMHO, the Hitachi & Samsung are virtually impossible to receive in a new store bought Xbox360.
If it's a Lite-On, you need to open the console to see if it is:
Lite-On Ver 74850c = Probe required
Lite-On Ver 83850c = Probe not required
BenQ = Probe not required

How do you find that out?

Hardly, he just said to look through the oval hole after removing the faceplate, not open the whole console up and look on the sticker on the drive itself.

Maybe open doesn't actually mean open, in "Phil-speak".
