I backed up Assassins Creed 2 to protect the original a week ago..

I put the game in, it boots up... and after a couple of minutes it crashes.

any reason why it does this?

i have tested it on friends modified consoles and works perfect.

I have noticed intense laser marks on the disc... is there any reason why it would physically damage it? i know the laser has to work harder?

Could it be something to do with the potentiometer?

Do you have a Hitachi drive by any chance?

Sometime, you have to adjust the laser strength so they will read non pressed disks. This can happen with other drives as well. Search for the term "Pot Calibration".

i adjusted the Pot but to no avail.

Could it be a bad burn? although it seems to work on systems with Benq and Hitachi drives.

Could it be my activation.iso disc?

no it is not the activate.iso disc. you said that you have the original, if that is the case then use the original disc to install the game to the HDD. once installed you can use the backup to start the game (still will need activate.iso disc) and it will load off disc for 2 or 3 seconds and after thatit will load off the HDD. I dont know why nobody understands this yet, I have said it 1000 times. INSTALL YOUR GAMES TO THE HDD TO TAKE THE LOAD OFF THE DVD DRIVE !!!
