I know this is a terribly noob question. But I've been looking everywhere in the internets and I've pretty much failed royally.
Can anyone please show me an up to date guide on how to make back ups of retail Xbox 360 games. I know that my console doesn't support JTAG... Whatever that means, but it does read burnt discs... So please? Maybe even a general modded Xbox 360 for dummies guide?
Again I know this has been asked a lot probably, but please! Help. :)

The only information out of all that I found that pertained to what I was looking for is this.
Quote: 8a. What type of DVD drive do I need to rip my 360 games?
- You will need a DVD Drive that can support Kreon Firmware, or a 360 DVD Drive flashed with 008 Firmware or iXtreme 1.6
8b. What DVD Drives support Kreon Firmware?
- There are only 8 PC DVD Drives that support the reading/ripping of original 360 game discs, with Kreon 1.00 Firmware.
Samsung Drives
SH-D163A (SATA - Older Model)
SH-D163B (SATA - Newer Model)
SH-D162C (IDE - Older Model)
SH-D162D (IDE - Newer Model)
HP Drives
TS-H353A (SATA - Older Model)
TS-H353B (SATA - Newer Model)
TS-H352C (IDE - Older Model)
TS-H352D (IDE - Newer Model)
Is this still the case? No way of ripping games with my Laptops DVD drive? If so, where could I find these online. And more so, do I have to actually mod them myself? Or to rip them do I just need to plug it in. Are they external or internal drives?
Sorry but there wasn't a full guide on how to rip the games.

that info is outdated. supposedly kreon rips can be detected. But I wouldn't but one anyway.
If you have a 360 (which obviously you do), then you already have one.
I've only done benq drives, and the others differ. See which one you have and take note of the specifics (google). But the following applies to benq drives, which are the most common (on newer systems).
Does your computer have SATA hard drives/dvd drives? If it does, then chances are you're set. Just unplug the SATA connection on your 360's DVD drive (and your computer's DVD drive), then plug the cable that was in your computer's DVD drive into your 360's DVD drive-- attaching the 360 drive to your computer. The A/V cables must be hooked into your 360 and to a TV, and so on (as the 360 will physically power the drive). yeah, that means having your 360 practically inside your case, unless you have a long SATA cable. Then just follow jungleflasher tutorials from there.
There is the off-chance that your SATA controller chipset can't support it... but chances are it will. Worst case scenario it just won't work, and you'll have to try another computer. So you can either check yours for compatibility by googling around, or just try and see.
edit: I don't know about the other drives, but there is no connectivity kit needed for benq drives. I've never used or seen one.
Also, no, there is no other way to backup. The drives are special, not normal dvd drives. Important data (Security Sectors) are stored on a section of the physical DVD that normal drives (purposefully) cannot read. The laser assemblies cannot physically move close enough to the center hole of the disc to read the sectors.
you may also need to install port I/O. I can't remember if I did this manually or if it comes with one of the other programs.
Also, the only way you can brick your system (witha benq drive) that I know of is to misplace your dvd drive key and original firmware. Make a backup or two and keep it safe. Write it down also if you want. You need to use 0800 software to rip, and LT+ 1.1 (for benq, anyway) to play, but you need to remember to spoof it with the key from your original firmware or it won't work. If you lose that key... you're screwed. You need the original firmware installed when you install updates, from what I hear. So if a game says update X is required to install, cancel, re-flash with your original firmware, then install the update, and then go back to LT+ 1.1. I've heard anecdotal evidence that updating to certain versions with the LT+ firmware installed can flag your system for banning.

but how do you power the benq drive without one then if you going to use it as a 0800 drive

or he could just install the latest dashboard then flash with LT+1.1. and no game updates does not require original firmware

but do you use xbox live with those rips?? because from what i see its easy for microsoft to find out if your using a pirated rip by check the abgx360 page. The XEX, SS and DMI that iso comes with matches with thousands of people who have downloaded and the same rip that you have.

So far, so good. It seems Microsoft has been moving in a different direction in order to prevent piracy...also worthy of being mentioned is games should also be patched through abgx360 for Ap2.5, if required.

Yes, you can use Xbox live with rips as long as you have patched and burned the games correctly. I think you're misunderstanding something here...as thousands and thousands of people play the same retail disc versions of games all the time. The different versions found in the database represent different versions of retail discs that have been distributed by the manufacturer to end users (consumers, general public). To Microsoft (in general), as long as the hacked firmware is doing its job, a retail disc and a copy look exactly the same.
While we don't posses a full understanding of all the different circumstances that lead to a ban, we have a very good understanding of most of the ways we can be banned. The standards are expanding all the time, so what is safe now, may not be safe in the future...but checking games through the abgx360 database is the best chance we have...unless of course, we're making the backups ourselves ;)
"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

me: edit: I don't know about the other drives, but there is no connectivity kit needed for benq drives. I've never used or seen one.
bighead: but how do you power the benq drive without one then if you going to use it as a 0800 drive
The same way it is always powered... by the 360. The 360 supplies the power it needs perfectly... just like with the dvd drive, why would I buy redundant equipment?
me: You need the original firmware installed when you install updates, from what I hear. bighead: or he could just install the latest dashboard then flash with LT+1.1. and no game updates does not require original firmware
updates will install regardless, yes... BUT I've read a report where people applied updates to xboxes while their drive was flashed, and it flagged them for ban. On the xboxes where they reverted to original firmware, then updated, then re-flashed, the consoles were not flagged for ban. (thus implying that the update tested somehow checks the drive while updating) I've only read one report from actual testing and that is the result. It seems like there may be a particular update that does it, or all updates after a particular one. seems like a no-brainer to me to just revert, update, and then reflash. why risk being banned?

Hard to say, everytime one logs onto live information from within the box is automatically transmitted, just like the Windows Operating system thing on a comp where if you make too many hardware changes (not the mobo or cpu just ram,hdd & graphic card)you'll get flagged all it takes is one more change & you'll end up with a need to bloody well reactivate grrrrrr, whether the live check can see dvd-rom firmware who knows, then again the dvd drive is being read by the 360 so yeah man anythings possible & with this new disc format thing ms is testing there were reports the dvd drive was being flashed ? so it could read the new layout & it crippled the modified flashed firmware we do or something like that,it was round here somwehere in a news article or perhaps a reply to the news article thing,as for me only time i go online is for updates & freebie download content, tho if i was to go gold i wouldn't use copied discs that's just asing for it

Thank you very much for the support! But I don't care about being banned, but if I just install the update from the disc will it break my xbox? Because I have no idea how to flash, or do anything like updates in the modded sense.
