backups only play without the harddrive installed

this has happened on a couple of games....when the harddrive is connected....the game is choppy when it loads then gets the "cant read/clean disc" error....i take the ahrd drive off and it loads fine...any ideas
can i install the hard drive after the game is loaded? or at what point ? or not at all? thank you for helping

If you install the hard drive when you game has loaded, it will reset your XBOX back to the dash.
You probably have a faulty HDD, try a mem card to see if you get the same issue.

thanks mike , i tried another brand new hard drive and the same thing....i will try a memory card ...just have to buy one...any other ideas are appreciated.
i have had success on other games,loaded and played fine.... just 2 have done this so far...

Could be a corrupt game save, COD5 was giving dirty disk errors with my game save.

That's what I was thinking. I would format the drive. Or since you tried a different hdd, I'd point the finger else where like the game discs or dvd drive. Try the games in a different xbox with the same hdd/saves.
Edit: actually now that I think about it, a friend on mine had a similar problem, and he just started a new game save - problems solved! Likely due to a bad game save IMO.
PSP-modded, ps2 fat-modded w/fliptop and swap magic, PS3-YLoD, DS Lite w/ Acekard 2i, Xbox 360 - JTAGed with no dvd-rom

With the hdd installed the game has to load different parts of the disc at times and it could be a bad backup (bad data at that part) if you hear your drive slowing down it means the disc is unreadable.

Consoles:
XBOX360 Falcon console with Lite-On 74850C
PS3 80gb phat model with 120gb hdd
PS3 60gb model
PS3 modded on 3.55

i tried backup creator and schtrom...both with same results...backed 2 games no problem and they play with hdd....downloaded 1 game and its plays fine....just the other 2....using verbatum discs ,but will switch to normal dl until i figure this out....wasted 4 verb/discs

is this the "ss.bin" ?
what is the best way to back up...i mean the long version that works 99% of the time?

let me add this also.....i cant even load the game with the hard drive installed...it will onlyload with the hard drive uninstalled....so there is no way to even start a new game with the hard drive installed.
