sounds like the laser is dying. You could try cleaning the lens with isopropyl as well as doing a pot calibration to increase the power to the laser, but you're probably going to end up having to get either a replacement laser or drive

ok so is there a specific reason why the laser died in the benq drive? I know that the lite ons die because of the full dump situation.

who knows why, I believe every single drive brand has had this issue. I recently replaced a stock liteon that had never been opened and it had the open tray error. Doesnt make any sense really because they come from companies that specialize in making optical drives. If anyone else has any info on why it happens i'd love to hear it

try the cleaning and pot calibration first since they're free (assuming you have iso alcohol ;). Failing that buy a $10 replacement off ebay, spoof the drive key onto it and you'll be good to go

I just replace the whole drive. It's a lot easier and the same price.
