I have flashed my xbox as well. I know games work on it because I have already tested it. I use verbatim discs. I burn them @ 2.4. I have the layer break inserted. But recently for some reason after I burn them in imgburn and get no errors I put them in the 360 and it just says "play dvd". I put the disc back into my laptop and I have noticed that the discs that dont work and say "play dvd" have an extra folder called "$SystemUpdate". and its not my computers drive because I have working games that came from the same computer as the "play as dvd" ones. can someone tell me what is wrong? and does the "$SystemUpdate" folder have something to do with it?

Run the disc itself back through ABGX to test whether the problem is from the disc or from something else.

Im having the same problem where disks show up as dvd media. I have tried to burn Halo ODST and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 both twice on verb/memorex disks with no luck, Ive been looking around and something about wave 4 or the age of my flash firmware may be causing the issue, could anyone shed some light on this for me?

There are two separate problems being discussed here.

One of them is a drive issue.

The other is a firmware issue.

If you are trying to play wave 4 games, such as Tekken 6 or MW2, and you do not have iXtreme 1.61 installed, you will get this error. In that case, you need to use the activate disc.

If you are attempting to play wave 3 games, and you have 1.51+ firmware, then it is another issue. I have run into this same issue as well recently. I assumed it was an issue with my laser, but if many people are having this same issue, it is possible that there is something else going on here.

use always Verbatim DVD+R DL and use the burn speed of 2,4

Are you running the games through ABGX on level 3 autofix and burning with ImgBurn on Verbatim media at at least 2.4x?

Sorry, Noob here. Messed up trying to use the quote. I am having the same problems with various games. I have always used verbatim DVD+R DL disks, Pioneer 112 drive and burned 2-2.4X using CloneCD loading the DVD file. Used to have about 1 out of 10 that would not be viewed as a game but as a DVD Movie. Not it has jumped to about 50 - 60 % of the time. This is getting expensive for coasters. The funny thing is that when I give them to my buddy to try in his older xbox 360, they play just fine. I am not sure what version he has but he does not have the HDMI output like I do. He also has a different DVD drive flash than I do. Not sure if the flash is the problem. The lates games were Tekken 6 and Xmen Originals Wolverine. But in the past, I could never get Dead or Alive 4 to work in mine (looks like dvd movie). All my other games work just fine using the same way of burning. Not sure how to check firmware version, wave 3, wave 4, or any of those things. Also don't know how to activate disk. Wondering if the ISO files need to be Patched to work in my Xbox but getting frustrated with making so many coasters that work in my buddies Xbox but not mine. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Well, with the lack of info it is hard to say.

Tekken 6 is a wave 4 game, and since it sounds like you don't know much about firmware, I doubt you have the latest and greatest that is capable of playing wave 4. So therefore, even on good burns, Tekken 6 will never play in your current firmware setup.

Also, you are burning at 2x and 2.4x speed, which may be an issue. You should never burn a disc at less than half of the maximum rated speed for the disc. For an 8x disc, that would be 4x.

In addition, a game may sometimes report as a DVD and not play because it does not pass a stealth check that is built into the firmware of your 360's drive in order to protect you from yourself. Run the problematic disc through ABGX and make sure it passes all of the checks. If it doesn't, then that was your problem.

It could also be a laser issue, with the laser itself going bad.

If all of those things check out and you STILL are getting the error, then you may fit into the other category.

I have noticed this problem ONLY on Lite-On drives. In other drives with proper firmware, using a game that is properly burned will usually only report an 'Open Tray' error when it cannot read a game.

But it is hard to know if Lite-On drives are designed to have this type of behavior as a security feature, or if it is just bad luck. It gets harder when the water is so murky due to people having this same error for various other reasons.

I had my xbox 360 softmodded for me so I am not sure what the firmware is. Since it was about 1 year ago, I would assume it is an older version. Funny thing is that I know that my buddy has an even older version of firmware than I due since he got his softmodded shortly after the xbox 360 came out like in 2006. He does not have any problems with the same games (Tekken 6 that I gave to him to try) I have no doubt that the problem is with the wave version and my firmware now. Was there an earlier firmware version that did not care what the wave version was and just played everything? Since I don't connect to live ever, is there a way I can patch the iso to allow it to load with my firmware? Would the activate.iso disk work? Sorry for all the noob questions but that is how we noobs learn. Thanks

Yeah I am a NOOB with the same problem. Ive just recently had the problem with Assassin's Creed 2 and Dragon Age. Ive tried burning them on both TDK which I have never had problems with before, and Verbatim. They both play as DVD's. But I have no problems with other new games like FIFA 10 and Borderlands. Its just these two so far.
I have updated firmware for my Pioneer DVR-111D, 1.29. I have tried 2.4x and 4x speeds.
What could be the problem?

You could try this I had this happen to me when flashed my Hitachi I ended up with new drive. Also you can try patching the game if its wave 4 to wave 3 look at patching thread below.

ok heres another thing to throw into the mix.

i have an old 360 it was flashed when i bought it so i dont know the firmware used nor the drive thats in it.

i recently had a problem with cod5 but sorted that by reading on here and downloading the latest consol updates to a mem stick and putting that into my xbox thank afterdawn posters for that lil gem.

my problem is i do games for a m8 aswell now all his shop bought games work so do some games i have done for him but recently the ones i have done have just showed up as play dvd.

this consol was also flashed by a 3rd party so once again i dont know what drive/firmware used.

the games that wont play (off the top of my head) are hawx, batman arkhan, ghostbusters.

i use verbatim dl discs and imgburn and burn the orig disc at 2.4x and copies of that are done at 6x all the copies are checked in my 360 and they play fine (both ones done at 2.4x and 6x) i dont use abgx as neither consol goes online.

now he has just bought a 120gig hd for his 360 an i was hoping that was the issue but sadly not im now hoping that wen i give him my mem stick and update his consol it shud work as his is a newer consol than mine.

has anyone any ideas/advice ?....

thanks in advance for any and all advice/ideas.

i got the idea from sicdude iv just looked for his orig post but cant find it.

anyways heres the link to get the updates.

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xb...stoconsole.aspx

just download it unzip it and send it to a mem stick then plug it into a usb controller socket and THEN turn your xbox on and let it update.

i must also say that i have mesed about with mw2 so im not sure what wave it is at the moment as i have made that many coasters trying to sort this game out lol.

but im now hoping that i can play all wave 4 games *fingers crossed*.

Hey guys, new to the backup scene so could do with advise.

I'm getting the "Play DVD" error when i burn discs

Im using ImgBurn 2.5 and they burn successfully.
Using 2.4x speed write.
I am using unbranded DVDs (have bought Verbs)

I'm unsure what drive and firmware i have (bought from ebay), although i believe it is 1.5.

I do know it works as i have a copied L4D2 that works fine.

I have tried the activate disc like mentioned above but it gets the same "Play DVD" error.

Do you think it is just the unbranded discs im using? Or am i doing something all wrong. Any advise who be greatly recieved.

i had the same problems with a m8s 360 in the end i had to get wave patch converter and burn the same game 4 times in wave 1-2-3 and 4 to find out that his 360 will only play wave 2 games.

i also had the same problem with mw2 tho i got around that by getting the consol updates from the M$ site and downloading them onto a mem stick and plugging that into my xbox ever since (touchwood) iv been ok.

progs used vuze , imgburn vers 2.5.0.0 , verbatim dual layer full face printable 8x , Optiarc DVD RW AD-5240S 1.02 (ATA) , burn speed 4x.

there are ways to check the book type setting on your dvd writer but iv found this is normally not needed also the manuel setting of the layer break on your dvdwriter can be alterd but once again this is normally not needed as all the info like the layer break is contained in the .dvd file.

i used to use ridisc AAA extreme and they worked fine for ages then i started getting failures until i switched to verbatims since then iv been ok it could also be that part of the problem is your burn speed while ppl say only burn at 2.4x your burner might be struggleing to do a proper burn at such a slow speed (and lets face it 2.4x is a slow speed as we get better and better burners and media) so id try doing one at 4x just to see if you get a better success rate hope thats given you some ideas.
