My xbox has got the RROD again and this time it is irrepairable. So I have to replace the £350 worth of shoddily made equipment with another.
The broken one's drive is a Toshiba-Samsung flashed with iX 1.4. If I were to buy an elite or an arcade could I take the drive out of that machine and put the flashed one in? As an elite is going to cost me over £170 I dont want to be spending another £30 getting it flashed when I have a working one stuck in a broken xbox.

Yes you can but you will need to get the key from the elites drive and put it on the samsung drive, you cant just swap them around.

You have to spoof the drive. Basically there is no point as you'll probably get a lite-on which is a much better drive anyway. You will need to flash that drive.

No and its not as easy as just buying the same system, its impossibal to tell what kind of drive is going to be in the console until you buy it and get it home, that dosnt matter anyway because every system regardless of the drive make has a unique key

I have a friend who runs a cash generator exchange centre, they have loads of xboxes, so was going to check each drive and buy a samsung from them. But doesnt matter if like you say they have a unique key. Might as well buy an elite and get it flashed.

It all depends if you get a lite on drive matey which cross your fingers you dont because you really dont want one because you will prob get one one of the latest ones which means a lot of trouble to get it to work.
Buy a new xbox and post back and someone should be able to help

I have a picture of all the different shapes of the inside of the drives so when Im looking Ill check to see if its a liteon inside. Which would be the best drive to get (and flash to 1.6).
Do they still use samsung? My 2006 samsung is great, reads cheap discs saving me a fortune on not having to buy verbatims.

you would buy the new xbox and have to flash it all over again.... i don't think they make new xboxes with samsung drives anymore all benq or lite on's i think.

just flash the new xbox you buy why are you going to waste more time and money swapping and spoofing ( changing keys) an already old used drive in place of a new one..... just mod the new one.

Read the thread from the start, hes not sure how to do it and dosnt want to spend money on getting his new one flashed.
It is the best option for you though mate if you dont know what your doing, dont brick your new xbox if you can pay someone $30 to do it for you

then get rid of the old broken one on ebay... you"ll fetch maybe 30-40 bucks for the console, sell the accesories with it power brick sells around 20 dollars used.

It's not impossible. He could cross-reference the manufacturer's date on the box with this website: http://www.360drives.com/list
