Can an external USB hard drive be formatted into FatX?

I bought a 1TB Hitachi external USB hard drive a while back and went looking for a program to load game saves and music and whatnot onto it. I navigated a few levels into the USB Xtaf program and decided I was not to my liking. As a result I was wondering if it is possible to format my external hard drive into FatX so it will work with the original Xplorer360? And if so what program can be used? I tried hooking it up to the Xbox360 itself and formatting it but it shows as Fat32...
