I just got an xbox 360 with a 80 gig hard and samsung dvd drive. I would like to copy and play backups. I have tried going through the forums but its confusing as shit. How can i do this? Xtreme firmware?

You're going to want to take a look at Jungle Flasher's tutorial. That's the program used to flash new firmware onto 360 drives. The firmware you want is iXtreme. I don't know the latest revision for Samsung, though.
