Could I play backups again if I re-flash my console?

Hi, about a year ago I had flashed my console through a local store and everything was great, untill the new update came several months ago that had reflashed the frimware back to normal where it wouldn't read the games anymore. Can anyone tell me what's going on with the modding scene right now... I currently have the newest xbox live update and if I go to get my xbox reflashed with the newest firmware would I be able to play backups again, and would I also be able to play them on xbox live?
