Here's the scenario...

ixtreme 1.51 - tons of backed up games.

This morning I put GoW2, I load up, then hear a grinding noise as if the disk is spinning uneven and hitting the dvd tray. I observe and that's not the case, but it the grinding remains. I youtube the issue and it is seemingly common. Some people say it's a magnet issue, some say clean the laser, lube the motor, etc. I open up the console, take out the dvd drive, open her up. Two screws were a little lose so I tighten those down. I couldn't get the motor head off, their drive was different than mine. I just bought this 360 back in Jan. 2009 so I don't expect that's it anyhow. I put everything back together.

Now this is strange. I have an assortment of games backed up on all brands of discs, Memorex, Verbatim, TDK, and Dynex. They all have always worked perfect. Until today. Now some work, and some don't. I thought maybe Micro$oft banned some discs, some games, etc. But all games work in my other 360 console, which is the same, flashed the same.. A lot of games, i.e GoW2 freezes on on the Main Menu and says Unable to read disc. NCAA 2009 plays perfect. Both are backups on the same kind of disc. I'm googled out. Help, please.

Sounds like the drive is failing. I'm guessing you have a Hitachi.

UPDATE:

It's not a Hitachi drive. But thanks for the quick response. It's a Philips lite-on drive. Every game I have now plays perfect, except GoW2. I heard that grinding noise in the dvd tray so I stood it up, then laid it back horizontal, and it then really scratched up the original GoW2 disc, to the point that it isn't even recognized as an xbox 360 game anymore. When the scratching occurred it reset my 360 in the middle of gameplay... and also reset my achievements and rank on GoW2 back to level 1 from level 50!!! The backup discs work fine on my other console, so it's not the discs. I removed the hard drive, also tried it with the other hard drive from my other console, so that rules out any hard drive or system issues. I guess it could be the drive, but why would every game except one work? Actually 2, but they are the same game I just have 2 backups, so just one game doesn't work.

The dvd drive has sort of a scratchy noise now, but only sometimes. Usually on loading screens which I know is normal, but it's a bit out of the norm. It also sounds like when the disc spins its touching against the tray but when I take it out there are no new scratches. It's really strange that this is the only game that won't play. This was the game that was in when the grinding first occurred and I tilted the box and it reset. I looked up and this has also caused other people to lose rank and achievements as well, so I suspect that's the cause of that for me as well. But I continue to get the disc error for my backup copies of GoW2 on this console. What to do? I think the drive is fine because it now plays everything else, except this game. I have 2 backups, and it gives me the disc error on both. I've cleared the cache already. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
