Do I need special hardware to update firmware?

I have a modded 360, I have no idea how it is modded and no way to contact the person I got it from. It runs some games but others it wants to play as a DVD, so I suspect I need to update the firmware.

I know I need a SATA video card to modify the software on the 360. I've heard about flasing with a USB key, can I do that with a normal USB key or do I need special hardware for that also?

If I do need special hardware, can I get around it by using a wave activation disc?

Did they give you a dummy.bin file when you bought the system in case you want to update the firmware?

If not you will need to get the key off the drive. Doing this can be different depending on the type of drive the system has.

You will need a SATA video card.
Things go allot more smoother if you have a connectivity kit.
You may need a Prob/Spear if you have a 7series Lite-On drive (to get the drive key (dummy.bin) if you was not provided one).

If you do not want to do any of this then the activate disc should work for those that only play as a DVD file. You need to burn the activate.iso file to a dual layer disc (only burn to first layer). Then place that disc in your system till you get the DVD message. Now take it out and put in the backup disc and it should load the game now.
