I'm looking at buying a new (used, off of Craigslist) 360 soon because my old one died. What I want to know is, can I put my flashed drive from my old Xbox into my new one without having to spoof it? I'm not going to play on Live at all. I've read things saying that spoofing is just to trick M$, and other things that say it's for the console to recognize it.

tl;dr: Do I need to spoof my drive if I'm not going on Live?

It won't work. The DVD Drive and the motherboard of the 360 have a matching key. If you a take a drive from another 360 and try to replace a broken one (for example), it won't work. It will play DVD movies just fine, but it won't recognize any games whatsoever. You need to google jungleflasher and just flash the new drive that you get with the one from craigslist. It doesn't matter if you want to play live or not.
