As the title says i just want to know if the standard warranty covers disk read errors before i go ahead and open this unit??
Although i am a little confused about how the standard and extended warranties work.
For instance i have a unit here from an auction with a MFD 2008/07/25
I registered it with Microsoft and the Warranty Exp is : 3/2/2010
What i dont realy get is how the date's correspond?, Does the warranty exp go by the date of when the console was bought originally?
and the 3 year extended warranty goes by the date on the back of the console.
Is this right?
Thanks

1st year will cover drive errors, 3 year on RROD and E74.
Warranty starts from when you bought it.

I bought a job lot of consoles and this was amongst them, Do you have to return to a store within the first year or can you still request a repair from Microsoft?
I have 8 elites and the two i have just tried have registered.
1 has the e74 error so i will be sending that in but the one mentioned above just suffered disk read errors and from what i can tell has not be tampered with at all!!!, so can i send this in or will i have to provoke an alternate error : ) ?

Where are you located? In the UK you get a 12 month statutory warranty with the retailer. You can still go direct to MS if there's a problem in the first year if you like, but some retailers will do a straight swap and give you a new box, which is quicker than letting MS deal with it. After the first 12 months is up, you have a further 2 year warranty with MS which covers the RROD and E74 errors only.

Thanks and yes i am located in the UK, But all these units were bought from an auction so i cannot return to the retailer hence my question.
Thanks for answering i will try and request an online repair for this unit.
Do you happen to know if Microsoft would cover a unit that powers on and has spinning fans but will not display and also does not have no lights on the front whatsoever, red or green?
Could always post a new topic but if anyone know and is willing to help whats the point, right?

You still have rights if you bought them at an auction. It depends on the type of auction and whether or not they were sold as seen or they were described as not fully functional. There's some info on your rights here: -

it was a bit of a dodgy one mate, I made a deal with an ebayer but did not do it through ebay and it was him who won them at auction not me :(
Do you know if the warranty would cover a unit that powers but has no lights showing because i think it might drop out of the warranty or the rrod as it does not show them?
