Anyone have anything definite on this? I searched these forums and found a few threads, but no real hard evidence either way except for 1 guy who claims that he spoofed just the original firmware to another drive and got banned during this years ban wave.

I thought IExtreme now returned the correct values for any drive inquiries despite what really is there. Anyone know anything about this? Are we really supposed to pay MS $100 for a refurb or buy a whole new console just because our dvd drive goes out? Seems a bit much to me..
