DVD Drive Question

Ok I have a couple of questions to ask right now. So I shall try my best to try to explain my problem.
First of all I just bought an elite with NO shell or DVD Drive. I borrowed my cousins spare DVD Drive and tried it with the elite, but it would give me the error "Please insert this drive into an Xbox 360 console". It plays dvds' though. I have looked around and basically its either send it to M$ (out of the question) or buy a new one because its stuck in "DVD Mode" or something.
So I took out my DVD Drive from my 360 and put it in the Elite and again recieved the same error. But once I put it back into the original 360 it worked. (notes: extra DVD Drive did not work with my original console either. Also both DVD Drives are from non elite consoles. and I cleaned the lenses/consoles)
Alright with that said here are my qustions:
1) Does the Elite console need a certain type of DVD Drive in order to read games? If so what kind?
2) If I soft-modded(is this the correct term?) the drive I put into the elite to play backups, would it work? Because i'm thinking that since dvds' work, why wouldn't dvd-r.
(sorry for the nubcake-ness its my first post xD)

yea, it needs the original drive that was in it. this console will do nothing for you at all, so you pretty much wasted your money on this.

yea, it needs the original drive that was in it. this console will do nothing for you at all, so you pretty much wasted your money on this.
Genavive, each 360 DVD drive contains a unique Key number, which kind of "marries" it to the motherboard. Your motherboard is looking for that particular key number. So to fix it, you'd have to take the key from the original drive, and put into the new drive.

which he cannot do since he failed to do any research before buying a POS torn apart, parts missing console that doesnt have the original drive with it.

So very true. I was just informing him of "why" he's screwed, in the remote case that he can get the that key from the person he bought the board from.

Ok, Question, how do I obtain the key for the dvd drive? Are the numbers next to the serial or something?
Then once I know this key, would I be able to make it so... lets say...
I get another 360, switch motherboards and have the key/s for the motherboard I switched out.
Would I be able to assign another dvd drive with the key/s to the motherboard that I just swapped out?
(btw can someone link me to a guide to where I can mod a 360?)

Look in the 360 section.. stickied at the top are all the guides for each type of drive.. but if you had looked you would have seen them no?

No, it's embedded into the hardware.

This makes it seem as if the guy you got it from tried to flash it, and failed. If he flashed it, hopefully he saved the key. Ask him, but I doubt it, or else why did he sell the guts to you?

So if the key is embedded into the hardware, how do I gain access to they key?
Would flashing my drive make it useable?

Yes, flashing it and using the original drive key on a new drive will make it usable again.
You get the drive key by hooking the DVD drive to a computer's SATA port and using the program Jungle Flasher.
