I have a 360 with a samsung ms28 drive that had the xtreme5.3B firmware. I know the FW is old, but I didn't play multiplayer on XBox Live and I would just wave patch newer games to work on the old FW.
Around Feb of this year, I updated my 360 with the dash update when prompted and it applied successfully. However, the 360 red-ringed shortly after reboot before I even had a chance to play any game from disc.
Yesterday, I had my 360 reflowed which fixed the red ring problem. However, when I booted it up on the network, I was immediately prompted for a dashboard update. I foolishly accepted the update before investigating further. The update appeared to complete, but then a black screen popped up with E66 at the bottom. When I manually restarted the xbox, it booted into the dashboard with no error message. Then, I got prompted for the dashboard update once again (does this mean it didn't finish the update). I have not tried to run the update process again.
However, now my drive will not boot any of my burned games. I put them in, and the drive just keeps trying to read the discs with an odd clicking noise, but it finally stops and does not recognize the game.
I also have another drive from an old 360 that is flashed with my current 360's key. When I attach that drive, I get the E65 screen. I believe this is normal because it is not the drive that came with the system.
What are the steps that I need to take to be able to play my previous games? I have my original stock firmware from the ms28 if that will help in the process. Is there a further solution that will allow me to play AP25 backups?
Reflash drive with stock fw and try updating again. E66 is related to dvd drive either it is bad or the dashboard doesn't recognize the fw on it, which is more than likely your problem. And now since you have went this far with it, you may have to wait awhile for lt2.0 to be released before you will be able to play anymore burnt games.
So, last night I found out that my ms28 will no longer read any disc, retail or burned. Something the dashboard update did screwed it up (probably flashed it with a bad FW). Right before the update, I played a retail title successfully as I was just verifying the red ring issue was gone. Now, that same retail title will not boot.
So, I wanted to reflash my drive to get a working FW on it to see if it would fix it. However, I'm in a bind because I can't get the drive into vendor mode. I tried both the Sammy unlock and the activate ISO several times. The drive can't even read the activate iso disc because of it's bad current FW. My PC recognizes the drive in Jungle Flasher as an ms28, but it will not go into vendor mode.
I did NOT try the half open tray method yet, and I guess that is my last shot at it.
If that doesn't work, then I guess my next option is to buy another ms28 off of ebay and flash that one.
