Got given a 20gb hard drive that wasnt working so thought i would mess about with it. Hooked it up to my spare 360 which has no h/d but works fine and immediately got the E68 error.
Checked the secondary error code and its 1010 which according to google is - Hard Drive Error, Can be caused buy a corrupt or missing Eprom.
I havent opened the drive yet as i have misplaced my torx 6 and need to get another. What should i try when i get the HD opened or is it likely shot and not worth my while to attempt to fix?
most likely it is shot, if i came across it i would toss it, of course you can buy a hard drive and replace it, if you google there are certain drive you can buy and make into 360 hard drives

I have seen that other drives can be put in using HDHKR (something like that) and the drives BIN file. Problem is i dont know what drives i could fire into it. Only one i keep seeing mentioned is the Western Digital one but surely there has to be more than that?

There are a few different guides that show how to do this. The drives you're looking for are the western digital BEVS drives. Here's an example from PC world link
"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

Thanks for the reply. Had a look at that guide so will see what i can pick up. Ended up opening the HD and it appeared to be completely shot. Ah well least i have the case now :)
