One of my friends fucked his Xbox. Not sure of the exact thing that happened but I'm guessing power was cut when he was updating (he's saying the 360 worked fine after updating (FIFA10) and he even played but this started happening after he started the XBox after that). I don't believe him but whatever.
Here's the thing. If I have the HDD in there I get the E81 error (something I can't seem to get much info on with google). If I remove it I get a failed update error. Underneath it says the Previous version was pv.0.0.0.0 and the current version is cv.2.0.7371.0. After snooping around I found that you could just put the update on a USB stick and start the console and the update would be fixed. It didn't work however, I just got the E81 error again. Then I tried it with and without the HDD, no go. Not even the sync button trick worked. Is the 360 pretty much bricked? There has to be a way to fix it, it worked for others only they didn't seem to have the E81 error. So any help is appreciated even if it's more info on the E81 error.
Anyone with similiar experience? Doesn't seem to be much info on E81, one dude even told me it doesn't even exist.
I don't think you will get much of a response about this error. Like you have noticed, it is pretty rare, and I am not sure if there is a definitive fix for it.
Try using a memory card to update and then try again, maybe.
Thanks for giving an answer. I shall try it with the memory card. Hope more info about the error comes out soon. My friend suggested using a JTAG programmer, so will try that if absolutely nothing comes to light.
Yeah, the JTAG thing is actually a great idea. That would certainly solve the problem IF the problem is in fact that the reflashing of the flash chip was interrupted and the firmware is now corrupt. I am assuming, based on the info, that that is what happened, but it could be a coincidence.
I have no experience flashing 360s via JTAG, but I do have experience flashing other electronic devices via JTAG and that solution should solve your problem, if it is what we are thinking and if you can figure out how to do it.
Another method is to use a USB flash drive, if you don't have a memory card. It's a crappy error to get. Good luck.
