I do not own an Xbox so I am not totally familiar with all the ins and outs. I bought a refurbished Xbox 360 for my stepson and after the 30 day warranty it got RROD. Well I was able to fix the RROD or so I thought since it keeps coming back. I followed the steps to the tee and used all the proper tools/equipment. He can now get it to work by overheating it and then letting it cool.

This however is not the problem that I am asking I just wanted to give back-story. Now I bought a "broken" Xbox on Ebay for cheap money as a spare parts machine. I was able to boot the Xbox and use it with hard drive and I was happy. This Xbox however will not load Games/Movies/Discs of any kind. The DVD rom was bad so I bought same model to replace. But still no go nothing at all.

I gave him my spare machine to put his DVD rom in but it still does not work (pretty sure both Hitachi).

My real question is there a way to tell what the original drive that was in the Xbox? I want to get this working for him I know that drives need to be flashed but if pulled from another Xbox do they still need to be flashed?

Each dvd drive has a key which is unique to the motherboard in the XBOX if they don't match it won't work I'd say try all the drives you have with the xbox that's working until you find the right one. Also if you want to help prevent the RROD from coming back invest $20 to $40 on some internal cooling fans or a 12volt exhaust fan you can only overheat the GPU and CPU so many times before they die permenantly

Sounds like there is no way of getting that key from the motherboard huh? Sucks that I bought it from Ebay there is no way of telling what the original one was from that either. Thanks for the info I will see how many DVD drives I can scrounge up to test with.
