yea it would be silly,,just like sony putting a 4gig game on a 25gig or 50gig bluray disc, once these games come out, they will be examined closely,

My thoughts on this is they are ether drastically reducing or removing all together, the video partition on the game disk.

There seems to be conflicting information on whether they will fit on a normal DVD+R DL. The game data partition of an old style 360 disc had a max size of 6.9GB and MS said that XGD3 will give devs an extra 1GB to work with, so that's 7.9GB which would fit on a DVD+R DL, although it depends what else is on the disc aside from the game data partition.

I don't really see how MS could update regular DVD-ROM drives to read some new type of disc too. But then again, I'm just speculating and I don't know much about the technology, so I'll wait and see what the folks working on a solution have to say. If I was guessing, I'd say that there will be a way to burn and play XGD3 games at some point, cos the people working on the 360 side of things always seem to find a way.
I'm confused myself. If all they did was take out a 1 gig partition that was previously used for AP measures, why would the disc be radically altered?

I think you're missing the point. The PS3 can only play games from Blu-Ray discs so if 4GB is all the game needs, then 4GB is all it uses, but if required, devs can use all of the available space. Adding an extra layer to a DVD and giving none of that space to devs to actually use for games is utterly pointless.

The people in the know have had XGD3 discs since April when the Halo: Reach XGD3 discs were sent out by MS. If it was a triple layer disc, we'd have known about it from a decent source by now.

i know what your saying, adding that xtra layer is only for AP,making difficult to copy, there are no 3 layer disc out there so this is the best way right now for M$ to combat piracy, usually each layer is about 4gig,this would make this disc a 12gig blank, well yes maybe thye have asked the devs to use the normal space and leave that xtra for us to use as anti piracy, this will only be known once the disc is out and analyzed,as far as it being out since april, that is true we havent heard anything about the disc which is odd,but once it get widely distibuted, and it gets into the right hands then we will hear more about the disc,,

What if they're using some technology similar to this

http://www.myce.com/news/Sanyo-introduc...to-a-CD-R-4557/

I had one of those drives in 2002 and it wokked very well, till it broke now I have a shitload of discs that I cant read with a conventional dvd-rom. looks like it's a firmware flash that makes this possible.

Additional info

Sanyo Electric has introduced a CD drive which can read and write twice the normal amount of data onto a conventional CD-R disc, the company announced Wednesday.

When data is recorded with the CRD-BPDV2 drive for HD-Burn, a 700M-byte CD-R can hold 1.4G bytes of data. This will allow the recording medium to hold up to two hours of video, according to a Sanyo representative, who declined to give his name.

This allows users to record more data at low cost. At retail stores in Japan, CD-Rs are priced around ¥120 (US$0.98), while DVD-R costs about five time more.
Story Tools

Sanyo's HD-Burn technology increases the data storage density by increasing the number of useful pits into which data is burned.

First, the individual pits are made smaller. Second, an improved error correction system enables a greater proportion of the pits to be used for data and less for error-correction.

"This error correction system used to take up a large area of the disc," the Sanyo representative said. "In an extreme example, let's say, out of 100 signals, in which you can use as data, the error correction system used to use up about 30 of them but now, by using a new compression technology, it can be reduced down to 10."

The new RSPC (Reed-Solomon Product Code) error-correction system is used rather than the CIRC (Cross-Interleaved Reed-Solomon Code) system used in conventional CD-Rs.

The resulting disc has to be played back on a DVD system, because of the different recording mechanism used in HD-Burn, and the firmware on the DVD player needs to be changed to be compatible with HD-Burn.

To promote HD-Burn, Sanyo is planning to disclose the technology for free to DVD hardware makers, so that they can produce HD-Burn compatible DVD players.

As for the recording part of the technology, the company is approaching several chip makers and drive makers for licensing.

Sanyo will start taking orders for the sample drives at the end of September. A sample price is ¥50,000. The company plans to start mass production in January next year, aiming at manufacturing 30,000 units a month.

You can back up dead island using xbox creator. it will fix on a dldvd. Playing my back up now. I have the latest flash 1.9 something. War hammer space marine and gears of war 3 are the only games I tried to back up using xbox creator, will not read it, says disk is already unlocked. I hope they fix this soon.

Dead Island came out on both XGD3 and XGD2 discs. If you've backed your copy up and you're playing it on a flashed console, it's because you got the XGD2 version.

Lucky for me. Can you tell by looking at the disk which version it is? And why would they make two different versions? Also are their different versions of gears of war 3 and warhammer? Kind of new at this stuff, trying to read and find out what other people know. Thanks

I don't know if you can tell by looking at the discs. I'm guessing that they made XGD2 and XGD3 versions because the batches were manufactured in different places. There's no other game that's come out on both formats.

Add Dead island and Warhammer to the XGD3 list
Dont know about Dead Island being XGD3, I have a backup of it and it boots up and plays just fine. I have Lite-On with 1.91 firmware.

As mentioned, Dead Island is the only game (so far) to be released on both XGD2 and XGD3 disc types.

You currently can't make backups of XGD3 games and play them on a flashed console, so if you backed up your original and it plays on LT+ 1.91 it's because your original is XGD2, not XGD3.
