So my old dvd drive stopped working, was giving that horrific grinding sound when trying to load discs.
I bought the same model dvd drive (Lite-On) and just swapped the hardware from the new drive to the broken one to use the same motherboard.
If I put in a game disc, the menu screen for the game loads without issue. But upon trying to start a game, the system freezes.
(ie you hit start game/new game, it leaves menu screen to a black screen and freezes before the game starts).
I've tested with Halo 3, which when you go to start new campaign it gives you the halo loading screen deal, and after its done loading it freezes. And I've tested GTA IV which freezes right off the bat since GTA goes straight into the game.
Haven't been able to test any other games as I lost all of them in a recent move, but I don't think that matters.

Any ideas?
i had something similar years ago; after a failed dvd flash i had to dig through dumps to get the dvd key. after which the drive worked fine again, but the xbox would freeze after loading the intro screens (of any game). after some heatgunning, it would load games but would give artifacts up to to point that it was unplayable. in the dashboard itself it worked fine, just like playing movies (dvd). no problem at all, but as soon as i put in a game.... this xbox failed on me, and was unrepairable (gpu problem).
if you are up to the challenge, try heatgunning the board...

at least mine! you can always try to play a dvd and see if that works fine (if that freezes to, perhaps the laser is of the drive is gone) or get another game to try
