I just snagged my cousins copy of GTA ballad of gay tony. When I put the game in, it says I need to run an update before I can play the game. My question is: Is this just a dashboard update, or will it kill the firmware mod on my 360?
I mean, is there any way to play the game without running the update? Is there a program like the wii has that will kill the need for the update, or is this what people use the activate.iso for?

Thanks.
You should be OK to update (though it is recommended to go back to stock firmware then back to iextreme to avoid a ban), it wont touch the firmware on your DVD drive.
Your other option is to turn the ISO in to a WAVE3 ISO and this will remove the updates on the disk, this will also get you banned.

He'll still need the update in order for the patched game to run otherwise he'll get the continuous update loop or a DDE.
